RE: Increase in Taxi fare...
Both Uber and Grab are bleeding money, but they've got huge investment backing. Especially Uber, since it's a US company. Consumers get to benefit though.. From all the promos that save us $$$!
atrecord:
But they're jumping on the bandwagon in droves.
hours are long I meanmothernancy:
I take a lot of uber and grab... often chit chat with them also.. their hours are not easy and earning is also difficult..
And Uber/Grab must be making good $$ to be expanding its reach so far and wide, and so quickly.
If there's no support and demand for this Uber/Grab, then the supply will not appear.
The bad thing about this is that it's resulting in more competition for car buyers, as Uber/Grab and now SMRT are snapping up cars both new and old

RE: Sec 1.parents - how much homework does your child have?
My daughter does the same thing, but I have strongly discouraged her from doing so, because it means she misses the current lesson that the teacher is teaching! I believe it has to do with the management of time and effciency of the student. If pushed, they can finish their homework in time for bed and leisure activities.Usually when I sit down my kids and make sure they do their work, they can complete everything quickly.
janet88:
she attempted to do some homework while the teacher was teaching :faint: so that she doesn't have so much work to bring home. early part of the week is rather packed, so i can't get her to revise anything.
Yes, ds does do some of his homework during free periods in school or during lunch break before cca starts.ammonite:

i think IP schools may be more relaxed in terms of homework but busy with projects.
-

RE: 2017 Sec 1 (For those born in 2004)
This is such a great strategy.. One that I wish I could implement with my DD, but I don't dare to! Not with O'levels coming next year. I guess responsible and motivated behaviour like this has to be cultivated since young. Kudos to you!
Funz:
Why need MOE to forbid then parents can stop being so protective? I also don't think MOE actually forbids. More like encourage parents to let the kids face the consequences and learn some responsibility.elenang:
Parenting styles definitely changed. In the past, my parents could scold and beat me for doing something wrong but they do not bother to explain. We pick up after ourselves shrug our shoulders and just decide that whatever we did that angered them shouldn't be done again. When I forgot my lunch pack at school, I learnt that I had to suffer for that mistake by going hungry during recess. These days kids expect their parents to bring them stuff they forgot, they are totally dependent on parents and may even berate their parents for not doing it cos their friend's parents are doing it. Anyway, I am so glad that MOE also decided that kids need to bear consequences to their own actions by forbidding parents to bring forgotten food/water/books.

Kiddos learned early on in primary school that I will not be running to their schools to deliver or collect their forgotten stuff. I will not rush out at the very last minute to buy whatever stuff they need because they just remembered they need them tomorrow morning. Once they are tucked into bed, I do not allow them to get out of bed because they suddenly remembered that they have another piece of homework not done. After the 1st month of primary 1, kiddos pack their own bags. They are also responsible for remembering to show me any memos from the school as I do not check their bags unnecessarily. It is their responsibility to remember when are the days of their tingxie and spelling, they learn those on their own. At most they come to me to test them.
Now DD is in Sec school, I don't even know when her tests and exams are, I also do not track how she is doing, except when she gets her progress report. Then we sit down and see if there are any areas of concerns. She is the one who will have to explain to me what those grades mean. It is her responsibility to come to me if she feels she is struggling with anything. I no longer decide if she should have tuition, she has to decide if she can cope on her own. I do not source any assessment books or resources for her. She sources them herself and buys them.
Sometimes I do get worried that I might be in for a shock with such a hands off method but other times, I tell myself, must have faith in DD. -
RE: O-Level English
Thanks LanglitEnglish and Schootopia! I'll search for some more local alternatives then.
Schootopia:
The paper format is basically different. The writing section is quite different. The comprehension section may still be used if you are flexible and do some modifications.Katie73:
I've also found some good papers here: http://www.teachifyme.com/o-level-english-past-papers/
to tutors here, are these o level papers suitable for local students? the format looks different when I look at my gal's school papers.
On a side note, thank you to everyone for sharing the resources! Useful indeed
GCE sets different papers for the SG market.
-

RE: O-Level English
Hi, I'm keen on tuition recommendations. And coincidentally I live in Ang Mo Kio so it's close to Northeast!
I'm looking for tuition for my younger one. My older one attends tuition at anglais academy.. I think their website is http://www.anglaisacademy.com and so far I've seen plenty of improvement in my older one. Her mid-years got A2 this time from last year's barely passing. But their classes are full so my younger one can't join. Need to look for alternatives.jshaq:
For Secondary EL tuition, PM me if keen on tuition from Head of Department English. At Northeast; must travel to home.

RE: How To Bond With My Daughters?
I second the board games idea! Much more interactive as compared to something as static as TV or going to the movies.
slmkhoo:
Rule of thumb is to find something everyone can enjoy together, or if the interests are very different, at least do a variety of things to include everyone's interests in rotation. Part of the bonding is not just the activity itself, but the getting there and back, the meal after it, the talking about it etc.
You can try outdoor activities such as swimming, cycling, walking etc. Indoor activities such as visiting libraries or museums, shopping, going to church. Home activities such as playing board games, jigsaw puzzles, cooking or baking, watching TV/movies (and talking about them after). Even just showing interest in each other's hobbies is good for bonding. -
RE: Who in your family guide the kids in their work?
Singing songs is a great idea.. It's nice that your kids are enthusiastic about hymns! I shall attempt to try that at home.
FishFingers:
From young,I let the girls read stories from the Bible and explained to them the meanings behind them.Katie73:
How did you manage to inculcate bible study into their regime? My kids are deeply unenthusiastic about church. Can't even sit still during sermon, much less even pick up the bible. Does your family do daily evening prayers too, and little things like saying grace before meals?
After the few run-ins with me,my girls knew what I expect of them.
Through teaching them about Character First and values from the Bible, their characters are slowly changing for the better day by day.
Eg They themselves woke up earlier than us recently as early as 7am,auto had their Bible reading for the day until 730 and did their holiday homework and revision after that until I woke up and prepared breakfast for the whole family.
They did all these without me telling them to do so.
They were quite receptive even till now and both even remembered what I taught them for years even though we used to meet each other bi-weekly.
We say grace before we eat,I do sing a few songs with them everyday before bedtime and pray together with them.
