Direct answer
Student A (AL 9) would be considered first for the school, even if Student B (AL 10) put the school as their first choice. Academic merit (PSLE score) is the primary criterion for posting. The order of choices only comes into play if students have the same PSLE score and are vying for the last available vacancy. In that tie scenario, the school’s vacancy would be allocated using tie-breakers, which include the choice order among other criteria Ministry of Education Singapore.

How the posting rules apply here
The first criterion is PSLE score (AL in your example). A’s AL 9 is better than B’s AL 10, so A has priority for vacancies in that school.
The “choice order” matters only when PSLE scores are equal and both students are contending for the same last vacancy. If scores are unequal, the higher-scoring student gets the vacancy, regardless of which choice they listed first Ministry of Education Singapore.
Tie-breakers are only invoked if two or more students have the same PSLE score for the same last vacancy. In that case, factors like the order of school choices among tied candidates come into play as part of the tie-breakers

Thanks for reading the guide — glad it was helpful! . I Recently updated second edition to have a clearer timeline and checklist included.
What I can share is from personal conversation with my elder daughter after her DSA round — her impression was that the intake for Visual Arts at her school was very small, likely under 10.
But this is only what she observed, and it can vary by school and by year, so I wouldn’t take it as an official figure.
Overall, the intake tends to be limited, but schools focus more on growth, artistic curiosity, and process rather than numbers.
Happy to share more if you have other questions!

I’ve noticed a lot of discussions here about PSLE posting and how tough it can be to shortlist secondary schools — especially when trying to consider more than just the cut-off points.
I recently built a free website called School Advisor SG
that might be useful for parents going through this process.
It helps you explore schools holistically, by combining publicly available data on:
PSLE cut-off points (2024)
Sports & CCA performance (from national competitions)
Primary–secondary affiliations
Distance from your home (via postal code lookup)
Plus an AI assistant (“Ask SAI”) that lets you ask questions like “Which schools near Tampines are strong in football if my child’s AL is 20?”
The idea came from seeing many friends and colleagues feel overwhelmed during this season — trying to balance academics, interests, and logistics. The site just puts all this info in one place to help parents make more informed choices.
Hope it helps anyone here who’s currently shortlisting schools. Feedback or suggestions are very welcome — I built it as a side project to make this process a little less stressful for everyone.
Would love to hear if this is useful or if there are other factors you wish such tools could include.
Cheers!

Both schools are great choices and will provide a holistic and well rounded education for your child. I think you should allow your daughter to make this decision for herself - it seems from your post that she is mature and conscious of what she believes she wants / will make her happier.
The only point that may be worth mentioning as another parent pointed out is that MGS IP will lead to the IB program which will have a different curriculum and syllabus from A levels. That being said, both are well recognized and can lead to good university placements if your child performs well.
All the best!

It goes to show that even within top schools, the experiences can vary a lot.
If you are in a top class within a top school, possibly majority will take a H3.
But if you are in an average or below average class within a top school, the profile may be very different.
My kid’s class in JC, it may be surprising to some, about one third took H3s, and not many students are going overseas or pursing Med or Law.
Some parents seem to have the impression that most top school kids end up in Med/Dentistry/Law/CS/Overseas - it may be so for some classes, but I would say it cannot be generalised across all classes in the top schools.
