Weekend job = enrichment classes
-
Yes… I totally agree on the burnout. Though we are not the ones attending the classes, ferrying them around to be on time for this and that is also tedious. Sometimes, I feel like not bringing them for any lessons at all and just R&R at home.
For me, i am looking at weekdays as I am hoping to tap on my mum to help bring her. My weekends are packed with the older ones’ schedule. I cannot afford another class. I am thinking of putting my little girl in music station at kawai but it’s a saturday class at 2pm. Despite that I can do that since the 2 older ones are in chinese class during that time in the same area, I try to avoid it as I know I would have to spend 45 mins in it with her. Cannot imagine spending my weekends just on this and I know I would drag to do it… -
HAha...I totally understand the part on how I'm SO happy when there is public holiday / school holiday!
When I got burnt out and started stopping the classes...I began to look fwd to weekends (lying around and doing nothing)!
You have 3 kiddos... kuddos to you!

I think it is necessary to prepare a kid well before he enters P1. But I do not agree that you must send him to english/chinese/maths/science enrichment classes for him to be well prepared.
My kids only attend 1 Chinese enrichment class a week, because I am not able to provide a chinese learning environment at home. I am not worried about their English and Maths, since I am teaching them at home, and I am very happy with their progress.
I think the most important skill to master, is the ability to read independently, as well as a strong foundation in phonics. Once a child has these skills, spelling and writing will be very easy. -

Personally, i feel that it's not just about doing well academically but more importantly create the confidence in the child that they are able to cope with P1. It's no daunting task.
Tends to agree with MMM, to me both HYPY and phonics are equally important for a K2 kid promoting to P1. But of course, beside going to enrichment classes, we as parents have to reinforce by revising with our dear kids.

MMM,I bet alot of parents are in the same boat as us and this is how our weekend schedule look like :
9-10.30 - Creative writing for P1 girl
1.45 - 3.45 - Chinese for K2 and P1 kids
4.30 - 6 - Maths for P1 girl and during the same time phonics for K2 boy (same location as morning)
Through all fine tuning, we manage to push everything in the same day and for sunday, we only have piano from 6.15 - 7pm. But even then, this means I don't have anytime to spare to bring the 2.5 yrs old for enrichment classes at all. I've told my mum starting from next year, I would put her in enrichment classes (eg. molin, piano,etc...) near her place and she has to help me bring her for those during weekdays. Fortunately, there are alot of good program near her place at parkway and katong area.
As parents, we are soooo happy with school hols and also this sat being a public hols as it's a break for us. Where we are free to do anything and need not rush for classes. Just last week, we were checking if the classes are indeed close for ph this sat. My girl's maths teacher related to me that when she she asked her if she wants to come during national day hols, my girl didn't respond with a immediate \"NO\" like other kids. She wasn't sure. But I told her that as parents, we welcome the break, despite that we are paying for that session....
I really wonder how other parents are manaing...
when doing a search, found this from 2008 about your then P1 girl. now she taking PSLE! time flies.
sorry OT.

MMM, I know exactly how you feel. And yes, I am usually as happy as the kids are - and often, I feel teachers are too.

When kids were younger, we used to bring the kids to the beach and parks on weekends, and even bringing our parents along. We hadn't been doing that for some time and I did not realize it until DH reminded me that it was my fault for enrolling the kids in weekend classes.
We've had several breaks during certain weekends, but DH was busy then. One recent weekend, I noticed how exceptionally beautiful the day was - blue sky, cool breeze, sunny yet not hot, and I decided to skip class. Ya - I skipped class to bring the kids out to cycle in the park. DH was utterly surprised. He couldn't believe I would do such a thing but it was a rare chance we had after so long. We had the best weekend in months.
Since then, I've been contemplating if I should continue letting the kids attend weekend lessons. It's not as if the kids will do badly in school without those extra lessons. Then again, what else would we be doing if we cancel all lessons on weekends? Maybe I'll start bringing them for regular jogs, maybe we could bring parents to the parks too while we jog. Essentially, a day which isn't scheduled and no need to rush here and there. Maybe. -

Hi jedamum,
MMM,
when doing a search, found this from 2008 about your then P1 girl. now she taking PSLE! time flies.
sorry OT.
Time flies indeed. It was interesting to see my postings back in 2008.
You are right my dc1 is sitting for PSLE this year.
Our weekends are still busy and over the years, i am still excited about school hols.
It is interesting that things are still consistent. I wonder how life would be with a sec1, p6 and p3 next year. .. at this moment i already foresee a clash in cca timing on sat am. Things seem to get busier. -

Yes, MMM & jedamum, time flies indeed. It is interesting to see how much our outlook has changed too, with regards to our children and our role as parents. Life is a continuous learning process. And it is indeed a cycle - now we can understand exactly how our parents felt

Hey, but on hindsight, how do you think things would and could have been if you hadn't continued doing what you were doing all these years with the kids? Would be great to learn some lessons from experienced parents. -
Weekend = enrichment lessons for kids
= chauffer job for parents + hanging around, until child finish enrichment class
