        No problem.
I only started noticing it after someone asked about it. Only then did I realized how close the 2 usernames are.

I attended NYGH open house this year. During the principal’s talk, in Q&A session, a parent stood up and self-introduced as an old RGS girl. She asked Mdm Heng, the principal, to comment on the difference of the two schools. Mdm Heng set her view in mainly 3 points:

1.The secondary school period is the most crucial time for a person to master a second language. If a person misses this period, and only starts to learn the second language in later phase of her life, she may have to put in double effort and expect less result. For Nanyang, it incorporates the learning of the Chinese Language and culture into not only school’s curriculum, but also students’ daily activities. Regardless of a student’s ability with Chinese language at the entry point, as long as the student is willing to learn, Nanyang promises and guarantees that, by the end of the 4 years, she will have good command of the language.

            2. Nanyang believes that, at secondary school level, the students are still not very mature. Therefore, Nanyang insists on teachers’ guidance, supervision and support.

3.Nanyang emphasizes that a student is a member of a community. The achievement of a student is a result of not just her own hard work, but also the result of her parents, teachers, coaches and others who contribute to her success.

Personally, I feel that Nanyang girls are refined and graceful. RGS girls are natural and outspoken.

Agreed with GreenA and Becontented. My girl has become

Very much outspoken in her nurture manner. Both schools are good. Just which direction you would like your little girl to be immersed in!

Hi, I have gone for the RGS Interview and is going for the NYGH Interview very soon. I am actually asking if NYGH or RGS is a better choice. So, should I go NYGH or RGS? 😓

Hi, I have gone for the RGS Interview and is going for the NYGH Interview very soon.

I am actually asking if NYGH or RGS is a better choice.
So, should I go NYGH or RGS? 😓
Just go for the other interview first.

If both schools offer you, then consider which one u want.
Think of yourself standing at the end point junction, standing in either RI or in HCI.

At P6 now, do you have any personal ambition in mind ?
Some children have, at your age.
If you have an ambition, find out between these 2 schools, which one have a higher chance so far, of leading you to your ambition fulfilled ?

But if only one school offer you (the other reject), then you are spared the dilemma. And become obvious where you can go.
When the actual offer come to you, then you decide.

                        Here's my two cents worth.

Firstly, a little bit about my background. In 2006, I got an DSA offer from NYGH but not from RGS. I accepted it but after I got back my PSLE results my mum decided that she wanted me to attend RGS instead as RGS had a higher COP at that time. I was rather reluctant as I was from a SAP primary school where most of the girls preferred NYGH. Out of around 20 girls in my class, only around 5 chose RGS. Also, as I had already accepted the DSA offer, I couldn't apply to RGS directly. I had to go through the trouble of going for DSA again. I got in, but I missed the application dates for the music and art programmes. The opportunity arose again during the subsequent years, but I decided against it due to some negative feedback from my friend in the art programme. I think the art programme in NYGH is cheaper, whereas the music programme is cheaper in RGS.

I would like to start off by saying that I do not believe in stereotypes. However, I do not deny that there is some truth with regards to the mother tongue programmes. While many of my friends excelled in their mother tongues, they tend to come from Chinese-speaking backgrounds. Those from English-speaking backgrounds tend not to do so well, but one of my friends still managed to get an A2 for 'O' level Higher Mother Tongue, which is equivalent to an A in H1 Chinese at 'A' level. Many also tend to place less emphasis on mother tongue. My point is, how well one does in their mother tongue is dependent on many factors - family, friends, and most importantly, self. If one lacks interest in their mother tongue, no matter how good the school's mother tongue programme is, they still tend not to do so well. My impression of NYGH is its emphasis on cultural programmes, so I think that if that's important to you, go for NYGH.

With regards to the stereotype that RGS girls are outspoken, I don't think that all RGS are like that. I believe one's outspokenness is largely dependent on their personality. Introverts tend to be less outspoken. \"Quiet\" has been a word that kept appearing in my report book comments. Some of my friends had similar comments in their report books as well. Hence, this is a stereotype that I disagree with.

I would say that one benefit of going to RGS is interacting with people from other cultures. I'm not saying that NYGH doesn't offer that, as they have scholars from other countries as well. However, I would not be wrong to say that RGS has a more diverse demographic.

I am also aware that the COP for NYGH has surpassed RGS in the recent years. Let's not forget that NYGH allows bonus marks from Higher Chinese, so if you do the math, the difference isn't that much. Both schools have girls strong academically, as well as talented sportswomen, musicians and artists. Others have a strong passion for giving back to the community. My point is, your child will be surrounded by great company, as well as great pressure no matter which school you choose. Being in RGS has been a very humbling experience, as I realised that I can never the best at everything I do, but that doesn't mean that I'm not good, it just means that there are many who are better than me.

One of my gripes about my alma mater was its campus. NYGH has a prettier campus, but I think RGS should be moving to a new campus soon, so it shouldn't matter that much.

Finally, if I were given a second chance to choose between RGS and NYGH, I would not change my choice. I believe that the experiences I had and friends I made as an RGS girl has made me what I am today, and I would not change that for anything in the world, as cliche as that sounds. The impact that a school makes on a person is significant, but not as significant as you think it is. In my opinion, NYGH has a better cultural programme, and RGS gives one more opportunities to interact with people from other cultures. Thank you for reading my post, and I hope that it will be helpful to you. I apologise for being so long-winded, and wish you and your child all the best in your future endeavours 🙂
