      shirley tamzil,

      真巧!我女儿今晚的功课也有‘找词语’篇。我认为‘词语’应该是‘至少两个字以上’,所以成语应该也算是词语。

        不尽然(not really correct). 请看 http://baike.baidu.com/view/67611.htm

词语 = 英文的 “words and expressions”, 可以是一个字,多个字的。

          Hi Mummies,

词语, from my understanding is 两个字. That’s what I tell my son to look out for in comprehension passages.

            我也觉得是两个或以上的字. 词才是一个字, 对吗?

In order to help your son with a correct concept from a start, perhaps you should refer to :

              词语 http://baike.baidu.com/view/67611.htm

              语素 http://baike.baidu.com/view/73035.htm

Both articles are quite easy to read. However, if you need my help, let me know, I will try to explain more.

              Just a quick overview:

字 is a character made up of strokes. It is a symbol.

句子 is made up of 词, 词组(also called 短语)。

词, as explained in the Baidu article, is a unit in the construction of a sentence.

Let me give an example taken from one of the articles.

              \"春\" as a 字 is a character made up of 9 strokes.

              In a sentence like \"春在哪里?春在我们心中\". \"春\" is a 词.

              In a sentence like \"春天到了,百花齐开\". \"春天\" is a 词. \"春\" in this sentence is not a 词 but a 语素 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morpheme)

I hope this help you to clear up the concept of 字 and 词.

Thank you nan.nan, I’m clear after your explanation on the "春" and "春天". The link that you gave is a bit deep for me, hard to understand. Thanks.

                    Hi Mummies,

                    Need your advise.
                    1)当妈妈把一条蓝色的被字盖在我身上时,我觉得温暖极了(!)
                    2)我的小狗喜欢在床上、沙发上和草地上又翻又滚, 真有趣(!)
                    3)哥哥跑得太快了(,)不小心踢到了一块石头, 脚痛得没法移动。

Are the punctuation marks correctly placed in the brackets? Thanks.

                        Hi there,

I am a Chinese tutor teaching at the TAS. Hope my comments below helps.

                        1) This depends on the context in which you are using the sentence. It is not wrong to use the exclamation but there should be a reason for using it, such as adding to the emotion or the expression of the 'I' in the story. I will not mark it as wrong. E.g. If the sentence follows through with 我的妈妈最疼我了!You can see it will be perfectly fine and in fact adds to the 'colour' of the writing.

                        2) No problem with the exclamation at all. You are expressing excitement and interest at the dog's action. In fact, it will look strange if it ends with a full stop cos it does not convey the emotion of the writer.

                        3) The comma is correct. It breaks up 2 phrases which describes 2 separate actions. Remember that Chinese is a language that is 意合。In other words, you can run on with a flow of thoughts with commas that cannot be done with English (which is 行合)E.g. 我回到家里,脱了鞋,穿过了大门,爬上楼梯时,赫然发现家里有点不对劲。

                        😄
