It is quite common , just that parents have to be careful !
How could you have \"chanced across this thread\" when you registered with KS Parents in NOv 2014 and posted the above 2 years later in 2016?Music_lover:
Hi parents,
I am a Year 4 student from RGS who chanced across this thread, and would hence like to recommend my Chinese tutor whom I had been under for the past 5 years. She is very patient and I really like her teaching style, because she will cater her lessons in accordance to the students requirements.
She conduct lessons both in small groups of maximum 6..........................
I would urge all tutors not to advertise their services here by pretending to be someone else that they aren't. -

Can anyone advise whether it is advisable for kid in P6 standard Chinese to try for HCL IN SEC1? Is the learning curve very steep? There will be a placement test in jan18.
Hi ongstarling,
How is the kid's command of chinese language and interest in it?
HCL exam components include editing (correctly the underlined sentences in a passage where the issue could be wrong choice of phrase/wrong sentence structure/redundant components etc.) and paragraphs summary. The types of compre passages increase, as well as the rhetorical methods involved. The learning curve will no doubt be steep and more personal reading is required (cannot simply rely on school teachings). How steep and how easily overcome depends on numerous factors - foundation and interests are 2 main ones to begin with. -
Hi Chenlaoshi
Thanks for the reply. Basically foundation is very weak especially comprehension even for standard Chinese.
Perhaps will have to talk to him again especially on the interest part. -

I see, ongstarling. Yeah, personally, I think there's no harm trying if there is sufficient interest. While I commented from the academic point of view in my previous post (unfortunately due to the realistic environment/society we are in), in terms of learning and knowledge wise, there are interesting and useful aspects like more exposure to different forms of literature (at beginner/intermediate level) and effect/beauty of the various rhetorical approaches etc..Hi Chenlaoshi

My Daughter scored B3 for O level Chinese. She took this exam last year when she was in Sec 3. Her teacher now told her to withdraw from Higher Chinese in Sec 4, because HCL paper is very difficult and likely my daughter will score F9. However the same teacher at same time she told her that she has potential to score A1 for O level Chinese if she retakes this year in Sec 4. Question is, is it possible that there is such a huge gap between O level CL and HCL?

Any advice or experience on which centre is good for HCL in secondary school? Han Language, Wanglaoshi, or Fenghua?

Same here, seems like teachers are sending them away from HMTL. B3 ( MTL) will not be able to bring home a C6 (HMTL) ?? -
Is your child also in a girls school ?

Understand that in my DD’s school, pupils can only continue HCL in Sec 4 if they score A1 or A2 in Sec 3 O’ Level CL. Is this the same practice for other schools?
-
It’s a school policy. So the individual school decides. I don’t agree with this policy because I know many students who scored b3 or lower for normal Chinese O levels, in fact do very well for higher Chinese
