To a certain extent, this is making me worry if BTPS as a small cohort (180 total) will have limited CCAs? I think they do band. Anyone know what are the other CCAs which BTPS don't cover (i.e. typically for other primary schools)? I heard most primary just do badminton and basketball? My kids currently do tennis but I heard most primary schools don't have tennis courts!
You can refer to Bukit Timah Pri (and just about every primary school’s) website for details.

MOST primary schools and secondary schools do not have tennis courts. Nothing unusual.

For list of Bukit Timah Primary School CCAs, refer to their website.
        https://bukittimahpri.moe.edu.sg

For primary schools having Tennis as CCAs, they are very limited and you can search it using the MOE website School Information Service (SIS).

        https://sis.moe.gov.sg

A quick search reveals that not many primary schools offers Tennis as CCAs and I have listed them below.

        1. ACS (Junior)
        2. ACS (Primary)
        3. CHIJ (Kellock)
        4. CHIJ (Toa Payoh)
        5. Farrer Park Primary
        6. Fuhua Primary
        7. Marymount Convent
        8. Nanyang Primary
        9. Raffles Girls Primary
        10. Rosyth School

        Hope this helps.

My experience with pri sch cca is that they do go through trials and auditions. Then you put down your choices. So it is a case of you choose cca and cca choose you, it is mutual, not one-sided. And def not through balloting. But I understand that different sch can do different things.

Also, the cca trainings seem to be to be quite serious, in my opinion. But of course, this is subjective. Serious to me, may not be very serous to another. Attendance is also marked.

With a smaller cohort, this can mean the school chooses not to open too many ccas as they need resources (cca teachers-in-charge for eg). So even though, for example, there exists ccas such as badminton girls, basketball girls, netball, floorball girls, hockey girls, track and field girls, r gym, a gym girls, the school may have only 2 sports.

And even if the school does have many ccas, I would imagine (I dont know for sure), that there would be fewer students in each cca and to me, that is not very fun. But then again, maybe some people like it, I dont know.

While we do not choose pri sch based solely on cca, it is an impt factor for me because school is not all about studying. Esp if it is true that some schools do the “cca choose you” strategy, then it is even more impt to me that the kid likes most of the ccas available from the list, so that whichever I am put in, I will be happy.

I do understand that, we may not really know what our k2 kid may like at p3. But then again, since cca is not compulsory in pri sch (I think), if you are allocated one you do not like, you can drop it I guess? Esp if cca is not a big part of your pri sch experience.

CCA is indeed a very fun part of the primary school experience (not compulsory). What I meant is, don’t expect to be granted “that one” CCA that your child loves. That’s all. I know many parents who are so disappointed not to be allocated “the one” that they like.

Thanks for the views. Yes, CCA is not a main consideration, was just wondering because I know BTPS did have limited CCAs (and their school site seems quite small), but just wanted to see how different it was to others. The tennis and swimming was because we had these facilities where we lived, and hence my kids have been doing it from young. It would be nice for them to continue this at school even for just recreation. Thanks!

For parents who are concerned with CCA offering, the school's website or MOE website School Information Service (SIS) would be good resources to look at. Since the starting point of this conversation was CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel, I think https://chijourladyofgoodcounsel.moe.edu.sg/holistic-education/co-curricular-activities-cca (14) is very reasonable for a 150 strength cohort.

That said, I would not avoid a school because my kid's favourite CCA is not available. While it's an important factor for me, we have to accept that in life, we cannot always have our cake and eat it. As long as there are reasonable alternatives, I think that's good enough.

BTPS has 14 CCA available - same as CHIJ OLGC. However, 2 of BTPS CCA may be off limit to girls - Boys' Brigade and Scouts (need to verify). Hence, the school is probably a good exhibit A for \"a small cohort limits CCA options\".

I had a look at BTPS website. Their Scouts CCA takes girls. I saw several photos with girls wearing the Scouts uniform. (Yes nowadays co-ed primary schools have boys and girls in Scouts).

And by the way, BTPS has Golf as a CCA option. It’s off-site by an external vendor. School bus provided. So it doesn’t mean that if a school doesn’t have xyz facilities, it cannot have xyz as CCA.

As for the arrangement for golf CCA, it's not unusual. Most schools (including secondary schools) don't have a swimming pool but that doesn't mean that most schools don't have swimming as a CCA (and most primary schools definitely don't have a proper track for athletics).
