Really appreciate if any senior parents can give some insight into these 2 subjects thanks πŸ™

Between History and Geo , given pretty much same level of interest and ability, which subject is easier to manage and score?

Let's look at the A level results. I saw from Raffles Press that both subjects are roughly having around the same percentage of distinctions at A level (70%). Certain years one subject will perform better than the other but overall it's about there.

I think both subjects need a fair amount of effort to do well, them being humanities. My son chose Geo ahead of Hist in upper Sec and devoted much more time (like twice) preparing for it during exams compared to his Math/Sci subjects. I like humanities subjects for the Sci students (like mine) as they require certain level of maturity, critical thinking and interpretation to do well.

If you're concerned about track records, then your son can consider Lit, with 90% scoring distinctions at A level last yr. Of course, that could be due to selection bias, although I believe the JC section do have excellent support for this subject.

Whats the most popular or common subject combi for year 3? How did your boy decide between History or Geo or Lit? My boy doesnt have any preference and abilities wise are equal for now.

In terms of 3rd language, whats your deciding factor(s) to continue or drop? My boy didnt do that well but still has some interest. He so undecided.

Hope to hear your experiences. Thanks!

Most boys choose Triple Science with Geography or History. For my DS batch and based on their own observation (which may not be correct), most popular is History, then Geography, then Literature. DS and many of his friends decide on which Humanity to take in Year 3 mainly due to interest in the subject (not grades).

There are some who choose Double Science + Double Humanities. The Double Humanities cannot be History + Geography. Either Literature + Geography or Literature + History.

Some boys dropped 3rd language for other enrichments (AEP, CEP, MEP, ...). The dropout rate for 3rd language is high. Very few boys will be taking 3rd lang in Year 5.

If your boy has interest, he can continue in Year 3 and see how it goes. There are certain windows within the academic year to drop 3rd Lang.

Thank you Coast. I informed my boy about your sharing. He is very interested in CEP so he said he'll continue with Third Language until CEP. By the way CEP only in Year 3?

For those keen in Cep, CEP started in Y2 (selection test in end Y1) . There is another entry point for Y3 (selection test in end Y2, i guess, please double check), requiring test and interview (possibly at end Oct for the Y1s) . Acceptance into CEP is on condition on dropping Third Language and all other electives.

CEP starts in Year 2. If there is no announcement in Stamford, please check with his Year 1 Computing Studies teacher.

                    All the best!

Thanks Coast for the info. If I remember correctly, he did take a test. Not sure if its an ordinary test or selection. I'm not so sure of the outcome though, I'll have to remember to ask him. I'm still adjusting to him being so independent and making his own decisions. Thanks for the advise, I'll encourage him to ask his teacher for more info.

If there is no change to the process, this should be the test taken by all Year 1 students for Computing Studies. The grade would be recorded in report book (but not affecting GPA) and used during selection for students who applied CEP.

All the best to your boy πŸ˜„
