This is because of higher productivity enabled by onscreen marking. According to SEAB, with this change, there will be no double marking of non-essay scripts while maintaining the quality assurance, resulting in reduced number of marking days. (Ref SEAB video below.)

Watched the video. But I’m left wondering how does the online marking ensure quality assurance of the marking itself? I get that the counting of marks is automated and this saves time in tallying scores, reduces error in this area.

I mean based on the video, markers drag icons onto marking scripts. My first thought is what if they dragged the wrong icon or accidentally undo or erased? So shouldn’t double marking still be implemented to prevent this and also ensuring the markers are not being overly lenient or strict in their marking? The chief marker only selects random scripts to check.

I think we all need to go and pray during PSLE and marking period.. to hopefully avoid any unfortunate incidents during marking. 😅

How random is it? select 5 out of 100 scripts? 20 out of 60? We need numbers here to ascertain if it is a decent enough figure for quality check.

Who knows... maybe the mistake might erroneously credit the student with more marks... 😂

Start weaning your kids off correction tape and Frixion and gel pens asap.

Since all the scripts will be scanned using the scanner machine, usage of any of these will put your kid at a disadvantage.

Yes, I wondered if these were part of the reasons for the unfortunate surprises in Math. The kids were too used to correction tapes. Some parents I spoke to, were not aware that Gel pens are not advisable or that correction tapes are not allowed.

Need to also start training them to make good use of the spaces in the answer sheet, given that no correction tapes to be used. So they need to learn to cancel properly and ensure there's place to redo/rework. I think this is also a skill they need to learn for exams, especially for Math paper 2.

Agree with you on this! Not easy… but a must with all the online marking. Actually could they use pencil for the papers?

I never knew gel pens are not allowed. Do they appear faint when scanned? What are some of the pens that are recommended? Maybe all parents need to be handed a memo to buy only a certain kind of pens. To standardise?

Our teachers advised 2B pencil only to be used for drawing (Math & Science). Dark blue ballpoint pen advisable for all other answers.
