Hi Champion,
Hi teh_oh,teh_oh:
Hi Champion,
I feel that the teachers in your DD's school is very proactive in this aspect. If I do not step in to try to coach compo, I think my child will not even pass. There are only 2 EL compos done this semester and 1 CL compo. Only gotten back 1 EL compo (which he got 13/20). In his CL tuition/enrichment, the few compos he has done (with good helping phrases) only got him 13/20. I cannot let him 自由发挥 because he tends to fall short on the number of words if I leave him alone to work on it himself. :stupid: My only consolation that that so far his strength (compared to languages) lies in Math and Science.
Congrats - at least your son is strong in Maths and Science :celebrate: ! My DD's is rather weak in these 2 subjects so Mummy here is trying to help and coach her. To compare, generally I feel that boys are better off with Maths & Science :boogie:...Girls are stronger in languages - Don't know why so but this what I observe among my peer's kids too.
I should be  to try to conclude that my child is good in Science basing only on one Science CA1 results. Haha...Trying to be optimistic, so he's good la.
Knowing that for PSLE, weightages for all subjects are treated equally gives me some consolation.

Hi teh_oh,
If your son is good in 1 or 2 subjects, then you have 1 less headache of getting him to do revision for that subject. Agree ?
At this stage, we have to be optimistic. -
Doing English Revision with DD1 can be quite challenging ...Somehow because there isn't any syllabus or books to refer to so she tends to be \"dilly-dally\" taking her own sweeeeeteeeeeeeest time! :x
Ok, she negotiates with me,\" I will alternate between Grammar / Vocabulary/Cloze Passage / Compre & Past year exam papers starting today till 06 May 2011. 07 & 08 May I shall rest my mind before I go for my 1st paper starts 09 May 2011. But, please, Mummy - kindly keep away the Challenging English 4-In-1 for the time being; I don't want to see that book!
. So, poor Mummy here has to shelf the book away for the time being ...

Hi All,
Need to seek your opinion / feedback before stepping into Popular tmr and do \"more damaging\" than \"good\"
Surfing through the different publisher webpage, trying to find a good Composition Guide / Model Composition book to help DD1 for the coming SA1 Paper 1...Maybe it is a bit of \"Last Minute hold the Buddha's leg\" but trying to do all I can as a Mummy
Anyone using the following? What's your opinion?

For 'last minute work', I don't think the first book works. This type of guide book is more for long term usage.
For model compo, I can't remember why I didn't choose SAP. I personally find SAP's compo book (i used another range for P1 and P2) to be so-so only. I bought FBP P4 level (someone recommended earlier) eventually after comparing so many of them for so many days . Was so tempted to go for Seng Yew (thick compilation of model compo with 'nice' pictures :D), but last minute went for the more 'reputable' FBP (and also because FBP P3 and P4 were sold out at another Popular bookstore, so I thought maybe it is popular. and because FBP has 'situational writing' compo). Have not used it yet, so cannot comment.
Happy shopping! -
Similar to te_oh, I have the FBP book but still stick to P2 one that I bought last year. Actually, it is still relevant as the topics for P3 SA1 is still very similar to P2. I have browsed thru’ P3 and find that it is too tough, more like P4 level.

Thanks for your sharing of tips; appreciates much :thankyou:
A dear colleague of mine got me the 1st book & the Casco English Phrase Book yesterday as she was out of the office running errands. She also got me the Science Explorer P3 at the same times.

Have not got the time to flip thru the 2 English books as was back home late yesterday nite after work and now still lying on the bed typing this post :snooze:
I have the following FBP P3 model composition and DD1 is using it like a \"reading story book\" whenever she has the time to read it leisurely

Check with you and like to hear your view on this - does your child use \"speech\" or \"dialogue\" in his EL Compo Writing? DD1 said that the School teacher encourages them to write so as to gain points but her tutor says otherwise. She commented that too many \"speech\" spoilt the content and marks easily deducted because of Singlish!...
I showed the tutor 2 pieces of my DD1's schoolwork and she just commented,\"Oh...too many Singlish; too many tenses use wrongly..etc..etc..If I am the teacher, I will not give such a high mark (16/20)\"! I was like  :? - Hello! I sent my DD1 to you to learn and to improve her writing and not just tell me how badly she did & she does not deserve such marks!  ....
I felt rather disturb after the class and was like having the immediate impulse to withdraw her from the class! It's not that I am not open to feedback but she is not giving me positive feedback that can help my DD1 to improve!

I hardly hear feedback from my child's teachers regarding compo done in school. I told my child that he must include dialogue to bring up his wordcount and inject emotions into the compo. -
For EL and CL compo, I told my son he has to inject in dialogue to spice it up…or else it will be too boring…not too much, just insert where necessary.
His SA1 next week, so after the oral today & 2moro, it will be reading up.
