Pls advise if Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is a common exam body for piano. Which exam body is more recognized?

For graded exams, it really does not matter. Normally I encourage students to take the exams that have the nicest pieces 😉 Any of the grade 8s by ABRSM, LCM or Trinity are considered as equals when it comes to being considered as prerequisites for any of the professional diplomas.

That being said, for diploma exams, ABRSM is widely considered as the most recognised ones, followed by LCM ones. Note that I say recognised, not the most popular. In fact Trinity diplomas seem to be rather popular nowadays because Trinity has completely removed the requirements of viva voce and quick study from their performance diplomas.

While we are on this topic, I would like to say that as a teacher I refrain from using superficial words such as 'talented', 'prodigy', etc on students. These words are very ambiguous and what one person considers 'talented' could mean 'totally crap' for another person.

Very true. 6 yrs /grade 5 distinctions is possible. Know afew in SYT many years back.

For violin I heard quite common. But for piano so far I have not heard any. The kids entered grade 1 at 5 years old and I think they only allow you to progress 2 grades per year unless you are under fang yuan.

So are you referring that Trinity is not recognised? Recognised by whom? Why is it popular since it is not recognised? Just because they removed the viva voce and quick study component?

Really? No need grade 8 to do diplomas - ATCL/LTCL?

definitely no need for ATCL. My friends primary school child did and got distinction too! I also know of two other of my younger boys schoolmates who took ATCL in p4 without grade 8

Of course not, lah. ATCL is a diploma. Just that like \"dreamaurora\" said, it's popular bc there are fewer requirements. Good for those who prefer just performing, I guess. I met one of my p6 son's classmates last week who actually said he preferred to take a teacher's diploma next time bc according to him \"he's not a performer.\". LOL.
