GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

Yes, and there are those high-ability mainstreamers who can easily score 260+ with hardly any tuitions/enrichment classes, just that they may not be so GEP selection-smart.
yeah. that's why no end to comparing and trying to determine who is better. Even PSLE is just another grading that will help you to a better school or a scholarship...that's about it....life's still a long way...still got many exams to take, many career decisions to make. ya? -

Well said. There's no point comparing.Picolo:

Those are few and far between. Maybe just one or two in a year? Then again, it could be in recent years more and more kiasu parents are sending their kids for training and these are the ones who are floundering.some GEP has relatively low T-score...230ish~240ish and it's no surprise why some parents may have thought they got in by luck.
But if u have interacted with them, u will notice that most of them have the ability to grasp higher level concepts, just that they may not be so PSLE-smart. -
Well done to all children who took the GEP selection test round 2. But its good to remember that "Success comes from 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration". My Chinese tuition teacher used to quote this to me (in Chinese).
I feel GEP, MENSA, and most other test of intellegience is just that - a test of how smart you are - and often in a specific area. It does not reflect on one’s EQ (and there’s a joke going round that GEPs fail in the EQ department) and neither is it a reliable indicater of sucess of one’s adult career or indeed life. Yes, of course, all parents of GEPs should be proud of their child’s intellegience, but its important to remember to develop other, non-academic areas too.
And remeber not to pressure the child too much. I have seen brilliant children who could not cope with their parent’s expectations, and developed mental problems. -

Probably less than a handful from each school but they r there. Some attribute it to DSA, some due to the poorer grasp on the languages...no point trying too hard to pinpoint coz MOE always give them preference treatment to certain extent  -

Were there any from your kid's school? Coz there weren't any from my dd's school in her year.jtoh:

I am a Pri 3 student.
I also did not have any GEP training or Maths Olympiad training other than what was given by my school as worksheets. My friends and I had lots of fun during the GEP round 2 exams. -

Just want to clarify that 70% is the baseline not the passing mark which is 50%. I have check this with the Math teacher and I think it should be the same as for English too.[/quote]Yes, yes that's the word - baseline. I forgotten wat it was called. Thanks for helping to clarify.
Hi 25hr mama, Thanks for the sharing. I don't think your friend's DD is bad in English as the GEP English test is pitch at a much higher level. I have seen their paper & it's really much tougher than the mainstream paper. On top of this, the passing mark is 70% so even if she got borderline passed, it does not mean she is no good! Do send my regards to her & all the best, she can do it! Jia you!Flowermonaster:

I dun think my earlier post was offensive in anyway, and I appreciate all responses so far. I wud like to emphasise that it is a genuine case coming from a mother's mouth (my personal friend). I asked her b4 sharing her dd's experience here & she
is ok wif it. She told me yesterday, her dd got the English SA2 result back. She managed to do better this round, but they still hv to wait for the compo, listening compre, oral etc.... & also the final computation of all the 4 terms. All the Best to my friend & her dd.

Thanks snow crystal, flower monaster & comfy for ur kind responses, really appreciate. My friend & myself had no idea at all abt Gep b4 our dds go into the programme. Our dd's are not in the same school, hence we communicate & update each other quite often in case we miss out anything. Since I chance upon this forum, hv gained & learnt a lot from experience parents like u & many others. Thank you all for sharing & the encouragement for my friend & her dd.

Hi, just to share the abit about the baseline score. According to one teacher during the PTM, she said that if the child’s score is below/around the baseline line, then most likely need to attend remedial lessons. Don’t know whether any kid that has failed one or more subjects get promoted to next level.
