That is what I mean by perception. Granted there are \"bad eggs\" in Japan as well as all countries, Japan is able to project a clean squeaky polite image in general which we fail miserably as a nation. Why? Food for thought.BeContented:
Last year when I was at Japan, tour guide was telling us how Japanese take pride & dun litter the place. Toilets so clean, peole patient etc etc. Look at ourselves ...... scold, shout, fight, blame, complaints etc etc. :faint:   We do really need to reflect else we will really move to next level .......
Er.. I've been to Japan.. for clean toilets, it depends on the area.
If city area, sure clean. But rural area, is like the kopitiam toilet like that.
Yes, I agree Japanese culture polite, etc, but then again, they got a lot of perverts in the train.. which we have very little of.
So we don't have perverts in the train, only screaming aunties. -
Because they are a people who have such pride in their achievements. When they meet foreigners like us, they tell us of all that is good about their country.
We however are a critical self bashing bunch of people who will diss our own achievements even when they are recognised internationally. When we meet foreigners who are enamoured by our country, instead of beaming with pride, we put our own country down. -

agree about the highway jam in Europe. no honking. was stuck for 3 hours in the autobahn between FRA and Salzburg .... no accident, just road work ...... ya, we came out of the car and share some snacks even ....
I encountered a major jam on the highway in a foreign country recently and it was the highway to the airport. I never heard a single horn sound, instead I see people emerging from the car to find out what went wrong ahead and they even gathered together in small groups as strangers to discuss a possible resolution for those people who really needed to get through this jam to the airport. The restless got out and stood at the shoulders of the road for a smoke. There was no noise pollution as far as I knew and my 40 mins wait inside my transport was peaceful. Everyone unanimously exhibited good manners. I had also seen the situation where people from another country in my group were going to blow their top because they could not visit the place of interest due to the jam and had to be postponed. However, upon looking at the group, mostly from that country, all patiently resolving the issue of the postponement, the volcano could not erupt. It was simply \"cultural pressure\" in the positive way.
but another incident when the driver missed the airport due to snowing he could not see the turn off sign ..... that was really ......... missed the flight, and replacement flight need to change aircraft ..... a missed turn ended up wasting many hundred euro$ .... but that is just part and parcel of travels ...... -

In your observation, is this what we have always been, showing our modesty in the wrong way or is this only a recent sentiment due to the many issues we are experiencing here?Because they are a people who have such pride in their achievements. Our people travel a fair bit so why do we not learn the better way by observing others' practices especially on this road manners bit? We have compulsory \"education\" but we cannot learn? Why?

Wrong way of showing modesty? No I don't mean that, I mean really putting our country down.

In the past, yes I will say we may have a wrong way of showing modesty. When someone talks about our achievements, instead of agreeing wholeheartedly and bringing up more plus points, we downplay the achievements and say not that great an achievement.
These days, we start saying huh? what achievements and we tell them of all that we think is ugly. -

Because in the school curriculum, there is no subject called 'reflection'.

I like all the answers I am reading but have no time to summarise my thoughts now. Will return later.

Now.. education is all about scoring good grades..
and in the process, attended numerous enrichment and tuition classes until they almost burn out..
where got time to \"学做人的道理\"..?
