I Can Read - Discussion

Hi,
She started the ICR programme at the age of K1, therefore, it might be some difficulties for them. I ever heard from her teacher got child who started at the N2 level as well. I believed that their programme model applied same throughout to all centres although is the franchise.
Therefore, it is really a torture for child as well especially at this age to read and have to face the spelling at the following week. But once they get it started, progressively you will see them progress well.
As for spelling, I have not concentrated much since her teacher also let us know via parent meeting session, he don’t really particular about the score for the spelling as he need to see the effort children put in to pick up the skill in phonics. Normally in their class, the teacher also get them to read out. This is my understanding from the teacher meeting parent session for the whole year programme. -

is ur parent teacher meeting during the first lesson or the end?
so in ur case, handling 2 stories and a bunch of words for spelling weekly is ok for ur child and u?
mine started since N1 with teacher cindy. no issue. until now in K1 its like chaotic.
anyone else have this issue with ICR? -

My son was almost same age as your daughter when he started ICR programme. He is currently in book 5. Initially when I practised whole chunk of spelling words with him (first lesson were about 60 words right?), I was very stressed too. Subsequently I have learnt to take it easy. Especially when he has gained more advanced phonics skill. We took 15mins or lesser each session, depends on how many words to cover, for 2 consecutive nights to practise for following day test. As for reading the passages assigned, my son is coping well so far, very minimal coaching is needed. I only help to explain the meaning for vocabs he doesn't know.Monster Mummy:

The start of ICR programme, the teacher will meet the parents at 4th lesson and middle of the programme if there is a need to reinforce. If the child is not able to progress, he will request to meet the parent of the child.
Yes, they cover 2 stories and a list of spelling words. However, the teacher will only test 10 words every week.
I am not quite sure about whether all kids at K1 facing this issue as my child do not like too much work as she still like to play more than study. -
I bought multi colours marker (those 12 or 24 pack marker) for my son to practise spelling in white board. He likes it!

Dear KSparents,
Like to seek your advice. Enrolled my K1 boy into ICR and was told that TCS level would better suit him as he is still quite weak and have probs with alphabets.
However I realized from the worksheets he brought back that he has been doing a lot of drawing, art like work. Just puzzled that if my boy cannot be on ICR level due to being weak in alphabets, shouldn’t the classes work on his weakness? I.e reinforcing alphabets rather than drawing?
The teachers for that level are also locals with diploma qualifications. Nothing against locals as I am one myself but one of the reasons we pay a premium at ICR is because they use native Aus/UK teachers that have higher qualifications isn’t it?
Does anyone feel the same? Thanks. -

next lesson would be the 4th for us. We are still contemplating to change teacher or change provider.
I got word from the horses mouth that he did not manage to teach the children but still assigned homework to them. That means, the homework that he assigned, was not taught to the students at all.
What's the point of doing that? I still dun comprehend.
for every session, there be a sound to focus on, 3 stories and a page of spelling words. From what we understand, normally it should be like this.
Teacher teach the sound for that session, go thru 2 stories, and the remainder story and the spelling are homework. but before he does all this, the beginning of the lesson is to go thru the spelling and the previous weeks homework.
thats the standard sales talk to us from the recep and the teachers.
But truth is this teacher is not doing the same thing. He cant seem to catch up or that this particular class has problems understanding.
After talking to him, i waited for my DD, then after the lesson, the teacher came to me and said my DD not ready for the spelling as she gt none right. (ok thats my DD problem, she is shy). and he told me he managed to finish 3 stories today. I was like ok, finally he caught up.
Open the book, to my dismay, no. He gave homework as usual for the next session materials but he DID NOT teach them the sound yet. So what for give them homework when the knowledge is not taught yet? Expect us to teach? then wat for I pay for the class?
Then we requested for change of teacher, another teacher we talk to, she also mentioned that no point giving homework when they are not taught.
But there are times when scenarios such as kids with more questions or having problems to follow, the teacher will spend more time with them. in the end nt able to finish teaching. I understand that, it could happen.
So m i gog to take their word for it and change the teacher or should I change to KRTC and have a different system? :stupid:
sorry for the long rant. -

Good Idea. maybe let her use color pencils as well.
But I m worry that will they stop liking to learn if one day we dun give them such \"fun\" things to do? like in school no colors allow in writing? :xedfingers: -
