        hi everyone,

sorry for the long message but would really like some advice about my situation.

i have 2 kids, 1 girl and 1 boy. i am ex CHIJ (TP) student so i can register my girl for this school however i have a few concerns:

        1) i stay at choa chu kang so the distance is very far. however my hubby will be able to drop her in school in the morning b4 he heads for work and i will be able to pick her up after school as i work at khatib. but is it worth the trouble to travel such long distance (30mins car ride in morn and about 50mins train ride home) daily especially for a young child??

        2) i actually stay next to the top school in cck, South View Primary (SVPS). so should i jus take my chance to ballot at SVPS or should i go for the guaranteed spot at CHIJ (tpy)

also, i am a SC so will have the chance to ballot (<1km) for SVPS but if balloting fails (2012 phase2C: 103 applicants for 39 spots), it means my daughter will possibly end up in the least popular primary school in CCK.

my daughter knows her work but do not enjoy the process of studying. hence, i feel she needs a more competitive environment to give her the motivation to study.

        3) lastly, i would need to go through the stressful process of Primary 1 Registration again for my son if i register my girl at CHIJ (TP). so should i just put my girl at a co-ed school now to save on all the trouble and stress?

        thank you very much πŸ™‚

Enrol yr girl into chij (Toa Payoh) under phase 2a first. Ij is a good mission based caring school, affliated to sec. Many parents staying in Toa Payoh would love to get in.

Continue to monitor south view under phase 2c.
If balloting risk <1 km v high, remain in ij and try to seek transfer into south view, once phase 2c end. If is within yr option to shift nearer to ij, that will be great. To me, even though south view may be the top primary school in choa Chu kang, but i feel attending a primary school that is affliated to sec. Is better (just my opinion)

If this yr balloting risk worthwhile to try, then you try yr luck at balloting. But need to have some standby Sch in phase 2c supp, and don’t look back at ij anymore.

          For yr son -
Maybe try to pv in south view under phase 2b.
But if u decide to shift nearer to Toa Payoh, then try to pv in one of the schools in Toa Payoh that is affliated to sec.

I can empathise with you your current situation. For me, I have decided that to let my child travel 1 hour to school and 1 hour back will be too tiring for her. Willing to forgo the good girls' sch affiliated to sec and even JC. We will just enrol her in the neighbourhood school 5-10 min walk distance. I feel my child needs more sleep than a branded girls' school. Unless I have intention to shift near to the girls' school, otherwise I won't consider. Using the grandparents' address is a bonus. But after weighing the pros and cons, I feel that I would like my child to study in a school near to where she lives. For you, you have to consider your child's needs. No doubt a lot of my child's kindergarten gal classmates will be entering that girls' school, I have let my child know that she can't be in the same school as them as the journey will tire her out. At such young age, a developing child needs at least 9 - 11 hours sleep a night. Take the time to think carefully. This decision should be made by you, your husband and your child. I wish you luck and do check out

              My thoughts about your qn.

If you register your dd near your mother's place then the option is to let her stay at your mom's place. To avoid being wkend parents you can pop down after work to eat dinner at your mom's place.

If register in a school at SK, there are 2 options if you are worried that you might not be able pick her on time.

              1st option - engage a domestic helper

2nd option - explore the possibility to place her in a after school care that's nearer to your workplace. You can contact the after school care to check if the teacher will wait at a designated place to pick your dd fr the school bus. Then check with the school bus operator if they operate the particular route to the after school care address.

Thanks for your feedback! Actually this is what we are doing right now, picking her up from school daily then have dinner with her and accompany her til 9plus then head back to SK.

Regarding the domestic helper, my hub and i are not keen on this as we don't feel comfortable with an outsider at home. As for after sch care, i also thought of engaging one near my mum's place but not sure if the sch bus will travel so far to fetch/send her. if they don't, that would post another headache.

If you considering SK school, you should consider an after school care that is in SK/nearby your place. This will save travelling time for your child. Likewise. if you considering your alma mater, make most sense for an after school care nearest to your mom place. I think which ever you decide, it will be the best for your child as you have her best interest at heart. πŸ˜„

We ourselves considering a central school or in the East. Though, easier cos alma mater, difficult for the rest of siblings like super high costs of IFC & CC plus most schools that i called already have waiting list. Also house prices [/quote]Can I check, what time does the student care centres open until? My only concern is not in time to fetch her after wrk. If she is in my alma mater n the student care would be nearby my parents place, if I can't fetch her in time, I still have my family members to help fetch her as they are all working in town area.

                Hi Shanna27

These are the info I've learned from all the helpful parents here. If i'm not mistaken usually till 7pm, each before/after school care has it own practices. If you decide to put her in a school near your place, have you decided which schools? Whether it is single session? You should check its balloting history especially more if you'll be in phase 2C. Good idea to check if the schools you're interested in have in house or nearby before/after school care.

                  Hi,

I'm currently intending to switch jobs (or at least by next yr) so, unless the next job requires no OT and can end work by 530pm, it would be pretty hard to fetch her b4 7pm cos i usually need about an hour to get to work (currently working at CBD area).
If i were to place her in a pri sch near my hse, it would be Rivervale pri sch, which is just below my blk. if im not wrong i read on the other thread that RP will hv a in house student care starting this yr. πŸ™‚
But i checked the balloting history for Phase 2C, and the applicants are usually almost twice the no. of seats allocated. That's why, if we don't manage to get into RP, then we probably have to put her in another sch in SK.

Parents have to note that Roysth School will not be involved. Rosyth School is categorised under Ang Mo Kio, even though Rosyth School official address is Serangoon North. Most parents will take the risk to go through balloting at Rosyth and in the event that it's unsuccessful, the parents usually register the children in Zhonghua Primary School.

Important note for Parents: If your child is not academically inclined, please do not put your child in Rosyth School. The reason is that those weaker ones will be grouped in one class \"so called the Weak class\", I feel that this is demoralising for a child who is a slow learner but has to study at a superior school because the parents want it. Please spare a thought for your child. If your child has difficulty in grasping concepts or phonetic, grammar, whatever English or Math or 2nd Language knowledge fast, please do not do injustice to your child by enrolling in Rosyth School. In fact, Zhonghua Primary is good school that nurtures children of different abilities and do not judge children based on academic. The only thing is that Zhonghua Primary School is quite far from the bus stop and has to walk quite a long way in. Alternative will be send the child to school in school bus.

Zhonghua Primary School has quite a number of students with high PSLE score. Check out their website.

Please spare a thought for your child parents. Rosyth School is just a nice name to say when people asked you which school your child is attending.

My suggestion to you: 1st choice you can put Rivervale. 2nd choice will be those new schools in SK with student care inhouse service. You should short list at least 2 schools for Phase 2Cs in the event can't ballot into Rivervale Primary though u stay within 1 km. 3 new schools that began operation in Sengkang this year are Palm View Primary, Sengkang Green Primary and Springdale Primary. Remember new schools come with new facilities. But that doesn't mean the teachers are all new. There could be very experienced teachers who seek transfer to these new primary schools.
If you prefer established schools to new schools, you may consider North Spring Primary or Compassvale Primary or Sengkang Primary or North Vista Primary. Browse through all the primary school websites to get more info on their programmes and whether there will be inhouse studentcare. It's better to choose inhouse student care service than external student care service. Because the inhouse student care teachers will collaborate with your child's primary teachers and they can do a follow-up if necessary.
                        Good luck to you!
