I missed your post.

For any parent who is still interested, my child started JMC at 4.5 yo, then started JXC for a term and switch to individual class at 7 yo. She took ABRSM grade 2 a year later, distinction. Now she also just got her grade 5. She was already reading notes on her own in JMC as she played the pieces at home using the JMC book. My other child who started piano individual at 7 now got ABRSM grade 3 too.

My take is, if your child is showing signs of interest in music and hitting at the keys on the keyboard (happened to mine) at 3-4 yo, JMC is a great music program for younger kids. If your child is not able to sit through 30mins, like my other, no hurry, Individual lesson can start at 6 or 7. no need prior learning before that. I would advise not to force learning music/piano onto a child if it is premature. Mine told me he wish to learn the piano at 7 before we started.

Piano lessons need finger coordination and on both hands first, whether on keyboard or acoustic piano. so JMC still will benefit learning. But if you want to learn piano as an instrument seriously, individual lessons are geared towards fingers and hand techniques etc. Most ideal if the child can continue both JXC and individual lessons after 6-7years old; JXC is good for ensemble and music appreciation, I also understand it got composition component while individual lessons is good for techniques, theory etc. But once kids start primary school, time is a critical factor.

I try to find more chances for both kids to play ensemble together to make up for what individual lessons lack. Piano teacher also organises regular performance classes for students to show case their learning.

Music is like English, encompasses several components, and piano is an instrument to learn music. He is doing better in school and more confident now.
For my higher ability (not tested but at least comparatively) girl, she just simply enjoys the sound of the piano and how her fingers can do magic. You are right, we must ask the kid whether or not he/she likes piano.

For myself, I went through Kindertune and JMC since 4 yrs old. When I switched to 1-1 lessons, I did so badly for ABRSM sight reading that my parents decided not to send my younger sister to JMC. JMC simply didn't build that foundation skill.

I also failed Grade 4 and at that point, my parents asked if I wanted to continue, and they would respect my decision. I think that was a turning point in my music journey because I was finally given a chance to decide for myself. In the end, I stuck with it and at 30+ yr old still playing all my past Grade 8 songs and diploma songs for leisure.

My sister on the other hand, gave up at Grade 6 because my parents also said it is her choice. But as a parent now I felt that my parents could have just pushed my sister to just take the final Grade 8 exam and at least it will be \"completed\". As a parent, I want to make sure that I give my children the choice, but also push them enough if they have potential but just lack effort. It is not easy to balance..

madraid

Reply to Yamaha Junior Music Course (JMC) - Discussion on Sat, 07 Mar 2020 07:27:09 GMT

6thisnthat9\" post_id=\"1938489\" time=\"1569762783\" user_id=\"145858:

stmum\" post_id=\"1806770\" time=\"1507443209\" user_id=\"160327:
[quote=\"barneybaby\"]Dear 6thisnthat9

Thanks so much for your feedback. Can know if your kid complete the 2 years of JMC before switching to individual piano class or can we just attend JMC for a year and switch to individual piano class?

These two go hand in hand.

We have to ask ourselves what do we wish to achieve at the end? pianist? piano teacher? music teacher?
For me, music is a good therapy for my high energy kids. It helps with focus span and practicing teaches discipline. It is good for developing fine motor skills. For my hyperactive boy, it has improved his cognitive skills. He is doing better in school and more confident now.
For my higher ability (not tested but at least comparatively) girl, she just simply enjoys the sound of the piano and how her fingers can do magic. And I think piano satisfies her ears' hunger for the fineness of beautiful sounds.

6thisnthat9

Reply to Yamaha Junior Music Course (JMC) - Discussion on Sun, 29 Sep 2019 09:40:09 GMT

ypurple\" post_id=\"1938455\" time=\"1569741577\" user_id=\"112262:

anyone has good private tutor to recommend to teach beginner course for 4.5 yo? After JMC I switch her to individual private lesson with private tutor. It was hard for her at first as JMC course building of foundation on sight reading is poor. She always tends to memories the solfege then play instead of DO THE ACTUAL reading of notes, this is a big problem for her to switch to ABRSM which really emphasis on Sight reading. The finger technical skills in JMC course was also not established properly so her private tutor had a lot to correct her on her from sitting posture to finger curving way. But her private tutor is impressed with her aural skills as I guess that is the only thing I feel that she benefits from JMC training on her hearing! My girl told me she enjoy private lesson more although it is tougher but she can focus more on the 1 to 1 lesson.

key_word08

Reply to Yamaha Junior Music Course (JMC) - Discussion on Tue, 03 Apr 2018 01:32:24 GMT

letting go JMc

Level 1-3 books, Cds ,Dvds
& percussion set & the music board etc…
priority given to those who take full set level 1-3…
PM if keen…thanks
