Hi, our orals were completed before the recent HBL, & this week’s paper 1 writings are cancelled, but the other papers weeks later will still go ahead. They serve as checkpoints to determine banding next year (in P5), as was explained to the class. We are already banded in P4, but there can still be further tweaks - for instance offering 普华 (~a third of cohort by P6) options to some, or transferring those who are not coping well out of the higher ability groupings. Perhaps the school will communicate more details at a later date, I’m not sure

We did receive letter says will reduce and moderate. Usually for Science, I will ask dd to read those topics listed from text book. Other than that it will all be past year’s papers from schools…so all mixed.

That is exactly what had happened! Our school, last year’s Sec 3 had a SC topic removed; this year when the topic was tested in a Sec 4 assessment, the cohort did soo badly that they had to add marks for everyone in order for them to pass. Teacher warned that if even 1 student had had scored well enough, such that additional marks could not be added, the cohort would have had many failures…

I go back and forth on this. With additional classroom instruction lost, I can see why they want to remove some (further?) topics this year. However, if they go back to putting everything in PSLE Math/Science next year, there's just more stuff to test in P6 SA1. And I'm not sure if testing when you didn't teach it is going to lead to any better outcomes. I.e. teach it and test it now, at least people will be paying attention if they get stuff wrong. But I do think they are really under a time crunch the rest of the way this year, so I see both sides and not really sure what is optimal (optimal short-run vs. long-run being the main unknown).

At the end of the day, we just have to deal with it and at least be aware of what wasn't tested this year.....

For CL, usually the scope will be Chapters 1 to X, so I was hoping maybe reduce it to Chapters 1 to X-1, X-2, X-3 at least?? Wishful thinking, probably, since P5s will still need to revise & know all the words before PSLE anyway. DS school is already lagging behind, I see they have not yet started on Chapter 13 which is about Teacher's Day! Teacher was busy covering Zuowen revision for Paper 1 happening in Sept...[/quote]

Ours still no official update. But I asked DS to kaypoh from Maths & Sci teacher directly. He said P5 Maths: “Quadrilaterals”, and P5 Science: “Forms and Sources of Energy” will not be tested. They are learning these topics in school right now though.

The CL cut that I’m praying for, still no news :gloomy:

I’m quite depressed after the EL Compo and CL zuowen papers. The topics that we spotted did not come out. In the end, some unusual topics came out. CL zuowen got 口罩 as helping word aiyoh…

Seems schools have varying start and end dates for the exams too though last day of school is 29 Oct,

for sec 3 some start as early as 24 Sep to 8 Oct (SJI)

True - especially if a guardian was available to provide guidance on how to interpret rubrics, technical support (shortening links for instance), consensus building

I recalled that project work used to be more dynamic amongst the HA children; these days for the better they are rolling them out across the cohort regardless

My (primary) kid+teams are able to independently arrange their own zoom sessions to work on the content, scripts, practices

The important thing I feel is that it is an experiential interdisciplinary out-of-the-classroom learning (though more often than not there is some hard carry...)

I think the trend is towards letting the primary school kids practice more project/collaborative work, at least while the stakes aren’t that high (not as high as JC PW!) It’s very good training for them to get used to solving teamwork issues.

Thank you all. I was aware of the general announcement to reduce some EOY scope for non-graduating students. However, I was not sure if this was a centralized decision on exactly what was in/out or if each school is in general culling things down (at their own discretion).

For the Secondary kids, yeah there is not much standardized. I think some math topics were just whacked for my boy.

Off-topic but I am always interested in the different level of group work across primary schools. 1) Maths & Science :
Different schools test different topics.

2) CL / HCL

Different schools test different dan yuan.

3) English

English composition, Paper 2 Comprehension passage, vocab -

All schools set different exam stuff, for English language

EOY : end of Year exam

When come to Sec 4 Prelim, they test everything that need to be tested, inside the O level National exam syllabus.

When come to IP year 4, they test IP (3 and 4) stuff, whatever that's been defined inside their \"Promotional IP4 exam requirements syllabus\".

I think there is also a difference between multiple papers and multiple subjects? Ours has multiple papers on certain days but no days with multiple subjects. But do have EOY exams 8 school days in a row

I do agree there is no good solution. I.e. no exam two days in a row (or something like that) would mean the exam period extends forever. Need to prepare early and stay well rested through the testing period.
Personally, I think that if a student has prepared well enough, getting the exams over and done with in a shorter period is a good thing. I think that extended stress is worse! And it's an incentive for students to prepare well ahead rather than think they can cram in between papers because they have long gaps between papers.

We'll see how it goes. This stretch is a bit longer than last year's PSLE so don't really know what to expect. Suggested to the kid to be well prepared before the test start and each day when back home eat, rest, look over a few key concepts or known difficult areas (for him) but don't expect to cram. Mainly try to get adequate rest, eat healthy, etc. :xedfingers: :xedfingers:

For S3, several subjects are cut, an example is Physics -> TIR and lenses are not tested

That letter is odd. MOE said will reduce the scope of the exams - which i take to mean the tested content/topics will be reduced. That’s what they did in 2020 too.

MOE did not say will deviate from the norm of scheduling multiple papers on the same day.

(Btw, have any of your schools informed your kids of which topics will be cut from the FYE? Mine hasn’t…so i will have to assume just revise everything!)
