<![CDATA[UNSW Competition / Paper]]>Hi mummies and daddies out there,


Anyone has kids in pri schools from P2 (or some P3) onwards and their schools asked if you want them to sit for UNSW Science / Maths / English papers? Do you know what are the papers for and what is the use?

I know some schools like Rosyth, Ai Tong, Tao Nan, Marie Stella have this UNSW paper. The format of the paper is very different from the usual school topics covered for the subject. I wonder what is the purpose of taking this paper, and the usefulness of the gradings. Anyone care to share what this is about? Thanks.

You may want to confirm with your school whether it is no longer participating in ICAS. Since a few years ago, some schools have reduced their participation or dropped it totally.

You can still purchase ICAS past years papers to let him try (answers are provided).

How old is your DS? You may want to check with his school what Math Olympiad competitions they are participating and see if he is interested.

Thank you coast for the details. Yes I have confirmed with the school admin that no invitations given out this year. May be I will mail them and ask more details on it. Yes he participated in SASMO. But looks like his school is not participating in other olympiads and many recognized olympiads say only can participate through school. He is in Primary 4.

I'm surprised - I'd have thought it would be quite lucrative considering the number of students I saw at the exam hall a couple of years ago.

Maybe UNSW changed vendors for the Singapore ICAS - you might want to contact the UNSW folks directly and see if they have appointed some other exam center. https://www.singapore.unsw.edu.au

Used to be in Feb or March timeframe for the test to be done in July / Aug.

If the school doesn't send these out, it probably means they have stopped participating in this UNSW paper.

Last yr, I emailed the form teachers to enquire & it was confirmed. So we applied & did the test separately as a private candidate.

This may be more for their local students but the H.Distinction & Distinction grades do correspond to the grades that my child obtained with reference to the marks scored.


HD

High Distinction: An outstanding performance; mark range 85-100. Indicates that the student has produced outstanding work, and has demonstrated a high level of understanding across the entire content of the course.

DN

Distinction: A superior performance; mark range 75-84. Indicates that the student has demonstrated superior ability to consider the course and its assessment requirements from a number of perspectives and to explore their interrelation.
