But my son’s school cancelled oral, so for languages I think it is already not a good indication. Plus it also depends on the school I guess, different schools set different stds. Get him as close as you can (and as he matures, he will probably try harder to accommodate too), and just believe that his abilities will be truly appreciated only later in life. Easier said than done when you see other kids dutifully doing what is expected and scoring top grades, but that's life. It will get better as he goes up in the grades, the no. of subjects reduces, and different types of intelligence are rewarded.

sharonkhoo

Reply to 2021 P5 Examinations on Sun, 07 Nov 2021 11:36:12 GMT

00skyblue00\" post_id=\"2045325\" time=\"1636279748\" user_id=\"143605:

CNA
How to raise a lifelong learner, rather than a child who simply aces exams
With the imminent release of the PSLE results, a researcher discusses how preparing children for life—not just exams—requires us to relearn learning by thinking long-term and outside the (academic) box.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/commentary/lifelong-learning-children-exams-psle-scores-parenting-education-2285381

Thx. My Dd was consistent in languages throughout. Eng stayed at 90-91. In fact her CL jumped 2AL in prelim. Maths was consistently hover ard 91-92. Sci drop from 89 to 82. This one is a big book worm. Never had tuition for any subjects.

Another boy, we are closer with, weaker in languages. Saw a big drop in Eng. Maths was consistent AL2, tho he needed a bit of adjustment in P6 SA1. Sci drop by a few marks, ard 1AL.
CL improved 1AL. This one rarely read books. Has CL grp tuition in p5 and Eng grp tuition in P6, drop CL tuition by end p5. By prelim, Eng improved by over 10points. CL improved 1AL. Maths stayed at AL2 (AL5 for P6 SA1). Sci managed to get back close to p5 Sa2 score.

Eng is first lang for both kids. The English and Chinese papers were very difficult and the marks my boy (and many of his classmates) obtained were much lower than usual. Wondering what was behind the school’s thinking behind setting such tough papers. Should we interpret the AL scores as indicative of what their expected PSLE score will be?

Hi. I copied this over from the SJI Junior thread (I can't speak to this particular school in any detail).

The P5 papers follow the PSLE format, and many kids will find them more challenging in both content and length. Historically, many kids saw a drop in marks in P5 SA1 (can read more in the link below). However, in recent years the P5 SA1 has been eliminated in favor of termly WAs (or CAs) and the first \"full exam\" at these standards is now P5 SA2 (each school is different but there is likely a range of how difficult the WAs are and whether they are or are not marked as strictly as the SA2).

In the past, many kids bounced back in P5 SA2 but now the corresponding test would be pushed back to P6 SA1. Add in HBL for a couple of stretches this year and some students may have more catching up to do vs. where they would have been.

As for setting a \"tough\" paper, I think many schools have pitched a paper or two at a more demanding level. Of course there is no universal \"easy\" or \"hard\" as each student has his/her own strengths/weaknesses, but generally speaking there has been a hard paper or two in actual PSLE so setting one as such now isn't necessarily a bad thing. The kids need to learn to work through it (during the exam) and be ready to go for another subject the next day.

Best of luck for the year ahead. Many will improve but it does take a direct acknowledgement of where and why points are being lost, and some effort to improve.

Link to other thread:
https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=68&t=86872

SG_KP1

Reply to 2021 P5 Examinations on Sat, 06 Nov 2021 08:39:06 GMT

sky minecrafter\" post_id=\"2045184\" time=\"1636187338\" user_id=\"130531:[quote=\"sky minecrafter\" post_id=2045184 time=1636187338 user_id=130531]
OT:

@MrsKiasu.
