<![CDATA[Boy injured after foot gets caught in escalator]]>SINGAPORE : A 10-year-old boy has been injured after his foot was caught in an escalator at VivoCity.


The incident took place at about 12.45pm on Sunday.

The boy was travelling on the escalator with his parents when the shoe on his right foot got caught in the escalator.

Staff at VivoCity managed to release his foot from the escalator and the boy was sent to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for treatment.

An SGH spokesperson said the boy received treatment for cuts and his condition is stable.

VivoCity is investigating the incident. - CNA/ms

And this happens because the feet are too close to the inside of the step. Shoes like crocs are made of rubber, so it’s easier for a step to grip them and pull them in. (Gosh - do you understand what I’m saying?)


But anyway - I think parental supervision is the most important. No playing/ jumping/dancing or whatever on the escalator, always stand in the center of the step and hold hands.

So that in case anything of such happen (touchwood), you are able to free your feet in time.

Just to share with all: this is a picture taken at Bras Basah Complex. The escalator has stopped moving due to a pair of kids' crocs stiuck there. I think thankfully it looks like the owner has managed to get his foot out without hurt (and left the shoes there).


My kids saw these as they were with me. Not only me, a handful of people were taking pictures of this. Serve as a reminder to my kids not to play at the escalator too.

Thats scary. I never like such shoes for my kids cos they are too costly for that ugly design. Although I did get a pair of cheap $5 ones in Thailand for my girl due to her shoe broken.

The most probably scenario is that the wearer, ie the child, still remains on the step while the step that he is on has already retreated into the back of the escalator, causing the Crocs sandals to be dragged in as well. I notice that most of these accidents usually occur at the very top or the very bottom of the escalator.

What parents should do is to to be alert and make sure that the child hops off quickly the moment they reach the top or bottom of the escalator. The rubber of Crocs sandals is also soft which makes it even easier for it to be sucked in by the escalator.

Standing in the middle of the step or within the yellow line does not help much, in my opinion. Being alert and step off the escalator in time.

They were like :shock: and I am sure it will create an awareness on them to be very careful when wearing crocs on escalator and slides. My K1 also adhere to the safety recommendations by putting the strap infront iso behind.

It happened to me more than once and the people behind me almost crushed onto me πŸ˜“. I think this is potentially quite dangerous especially when the escalator is crowded. Now I always keep a distance from my trolley and make sure no one follows me too closely.

I think they write everywhere very clearly that ppl with trolley need to use lifts 😐

But these are one of those sloping conveyer escalators designed specifically for shopping carts leh (not the regular staircase-like ones which can't fit the big trolley) 😞

I dun hv experience with shopping trolley stuck but I had once on my baby stroller. Its front wheels got trapped by the escalator (those only 1 person type) and luckily my mum is infront of the stroller so she managed to help me to pull it. πŸ˜“

the escalators in Mrt stations are faster than normal shopping mall escalators. All shopping mall escalators are standardized speeds. Even long ones. Had a course on escalators. πŸ˜„ And alot of stuff happens on the escalators, so please be careful, adults and children. Some time ago, an incident happened at one of the Mrt escalators; a very pregnant lady tripped and fell down the escalator. She was holding onto the railing. Extremely Lucky, she was saved by the people infront. And I mean very lucky because there were only 3 people infront o her and the second one managed to catch her. She suffered some bleeding but baby was okay. Very very lucky....
