<![CDATA[School Donation]]>My dd (P2) brought back a donation card from her school last night. Just want to find out how do you handle school donation? Do you really go round asking for donation? Do you just fill up all the slots yourself? But it will cost me more than $500 if I do that.

Most of the time the trend of everyone is doing and so I must follow makes me sick

I always advocate the bringing up of 'thinking' children i/o complying ones. I dislike 'Yes', 'Yes', 'Yes' kind of people, young or old included...

Come on Parents :?: - let's not bow to the \"Herd\" instinct and provide no ammunition for our children learning to stand for integrity,
what is right to be done ........in the process they learn to be \"Real People\" or 'Hero\" ....
issit not the legacy we want to leave with our children when we are long gone ...

We are sadly very lacking ....with many parents I came across cos they are not sure their children will be 'side-track\" for not conforming...

When my sec son came back from his neighbourhood school with a donation card, I supported it and encouraged him to build the 'thickness' of his skin to go canvass for donation.


when my sec girl came back with the same from her elite school, I explained to her I am not supportive of the donation drive (really get irritated by those minimum amount stated in the card) along with other explanation of my disapproval (such as her school is nice enough, her school has a strong alumni with many rich and successful people; and my belief that her school is actually very rich).

PS: My daughter talked to me about how could she not participating when the rest of the class were. I told her to think about it as a matter of principle and get over her unnecessary guilt or shame that others want to impose on her and I think she got it subsequently...
Well done Insider ....it get me to see elitism coming into the noble world of educating our young..... we heading into the wrong direction in the future....
our young will not have the heart for the less able bodies and the those lesser than them in any way...

Children should not be mark for not being able to give, then the
school is not giving holistic teaching then and it become like moving towards elitism..giving must come from your ability to give . :? 😄

Email is the best because we can leave a record for future reference. Call to speak to the teacher in charge of donation also can do. 😄

However, there is a collection tin where students go around each classroom to collect donations from all students. Anyway my dd insists she wants to donate $50 from her own money and also asks us to donate $50 each. She will ask our parants this weekends to donate too.

I don't think we are going to ask around for the donation. Perhaps just fill up a few more on my own and ask her to hand in.
Think this has become the practice over the last decade or so. People no longer bring the cards to the office. Most families I know just put down a sum and mark up as many boxes as possible. If still have alot of boxes unfilled, then go to ah gong, ah mah, uncles, aunties to make up the numbers.

Reasons for donation include improve the school facilities, more financial help for needy pupils etc.

It is the same with my dd school - school will use the money to improve the learning environment. And the letter that accompanied the card says \"to donate with a happy heart.\".

With so much homework, how to go out and lobby for donations? I remembered I did that when it was my time donkeys years ago.

What I did for my dd was to pass the card around the family members under the same roof (only 4 of us) and everyone circled the amount to donate. The head of the family then rounded up to a nice figure 😄

When boi was from a neighbourhood primary school he got this donation
thingy but less pressing to fill up all cos many families are not so rich and the school teacher understand .

But now boi in sec school - a better school - seem more of this kind of donation de lor.........
Will canvass for donation but will try if cannot bo bian ... will not purposely fill up card de...

This kind of donation differ from school to school- i believe is the initiative of the school board... the ultimate intention is to imporve the school itself
which let me to think that neighbourhood school need more of this kind of extra ordinary help because they cater to the masses of families from
a wider spectrum of families background.

During the sec school search for boi - If you compare the facilities that can be found in top school and some neighbourhood school ..
it let you to wonder if there is a disparity of needs between them....
which should be truncated the other way , the less able kids should be given more facilities because of their learning handicapped and the
more able bodies kids should have less because these kids
are more resourceful but then it not the case ler :? maybe i off topic here 🦆 🦆

DD came home with the donation card last nite too. She wanted to empty her piggy bank to donate to the school. We told her she can donate but not her entire fortune. DS slipped $2 to his jie jie telling her I donate oso. Make sure you write my name in the card.

I don't mind donating but I will raise an issue if the school is giving the students the impression that it is compulsory for all students to fill up the cards.

The card has some fixed amount for donation like $2, $5, $10 printed on it . There are a few $50 and more than $50. Receipt will be issue for more than $50 donated for tax relieve.

Yah. Same school and I saw the card. What I mean to ask is whether the kids are suppose to collect all the stipulated amounts.

DD1 has only brought back 2 \"angpows\" for donation during CNY period. I explained to her that it is not compulsory and who the donation is for (less fortunate children) so she said she wanted to donate. I asked her to choose an amount after checking how much she has saved from her pocket money so far. This kind of donation is much more meaningful and teaches her the right values.

When I was in SCGS Sec, we didn’t have this fundraising thing until the school had to move. In JC, I totally bochap cos didn’t quite like the school.
