every yr the batch takes different combi from another batch. So the sch can’t give exact reply.

It is possible for one class to take pure Sci (3 subjects) & pure Humanities (either Lit or Geo). It is Sec 4 batch this yr. But not Sec 3 batch this yr (1 class pure Sci with combine Humanities).

There isn’t any powerpoint on the subj combi offered. Neither is there book list for Sec 2 to 4 for me to check Lit texts.

- Every schools are different. I suggest you check with the school. Its very different from my dd's school.

Which is easier -- Pure Humanities or Combine Humanities?
SS is Social Studies? I heard is some kind of Singapore History, correct?
So, if take pure science, can still take pure humanities?
It really depends on which area is your dd's forte. I heard, geo is easier to score and study compare to Hist.
Literature, what books is your dd's school studying in Sec 3 & 4? My dd finds Shakespear quite challenging.

What options the sch has depends on what the students demand. It varies yr to yr.

I cannot find info from MOE website so I googled and found TKGS info where combine sci content is 75% of pure Sci. But my girl's sch is 50%.

My girl's sch is standalone. It is not combined with Lit.

caroline3sg, modular system for science, that means 1st 3 months is How Scientists work, next 3 months phyisc, next 3 months chem, and then bio.

The progress reports details are for all years, not only year 3.

I think, nowadays in most of the schools, Chem is compulsory. In dd’s school, its is compulsory. Then if you are chooseing 2 Sciences, can choose either chem+bio or chem+physic. Then the next one science not in this combi, can be elective (optional).

Combine humanities means 2 humantities subjects? Pure humantities means 1 humantities subject?

In dd’s school, lang arts (english and eng lit) is compulsory as one subject. Humantities can choose geo or history.

For details, I need to refer to the chart given by the school, but I did not bring it along with me today.

If go poly, depends on what course she is targeting. I have heard, Bio is not an important subject nowadays. Chem is VERY important.

Chem is alien to us. Is it a must? I am charting my girl’s path to poly, not JC.

Can take Bio only?

Is either Geo or History or Lit, right?

Hi millan, Sec 1 is a transition period for most of the kids and usually they don't do very well. New subjects, new techniques to learn, new environment, new friends, long hours, tiring days etc. Maybe your son needs more time to adapt? If not, maybe his study technique is wrong? Did you check with his teacher on those weak subjects, how to improve, whats his weak areas? June holidays is always a good time to brush up those weak subjects / topics.

Is he from SAP school? (HMT is more difficult). Or he is always weak in HMT?

He did not take HMT in Pri , I drop him off, regretted abit as he slaccks a a lower standard.

So I opt him. His prev tuitiont teacher commented not that he cannot do it, he just need to buckle...

Somehow, I feel that the school did not emphasize much on Chinese. Think I must gv him extra lesson again..

hi caroline3sg, in Sec, they call it progress report, not report book (hahah ... my dd used to correct me when she in Sec 1). So far, dd's progress report would have CA1, SA1, CA2 and end of year grade. Including percentile, min, average and max marks.

Yes, I agree with you that we should just let them be and see what the outcome will be like. Sometimes kids need sometime to relax... so that idling that you see could be your son's way of chilling out.

I'm trying to tell me myself to relax and not be such a kan cheong spider.

He did ok in the PSLE, as usual, with a lot of prodding and nagging. :lol:

Progressing from P6 to Sec 1 is a big change in environment, teaching method, number of subjects,… and of course parents and school expectations. Though 1st term has ended, but to a sec 1 student, P6 was only a few months ago. On paper, P6 and Sec 1 switch is a step response, however, it is difficult for them to wake up on their first day of sec 1 to have a complete switch of mentality.

I supposed the maturity progression of a sec 1 students will be gradual instead of an instant step response or switch over. I would assume girls would mature earlier than the boys. My boy is in sec 1 this year, other than seeing him grown taller, I haven’t seen a significant change in his habit and mental maturity at home, not sure about at school.
