I don't disagree 🙂

I think SCGS and SJI tend to get paired together because of the close proximity of both schools. Plus, I heard that a lot of the Y5 girls in SJI's IB program come from SCGS - I could be wrong though.

I attended the talk from SJI & SCGS today (part of the Straits Times Post-PSLE webinar series) and while I enjoyed the breakout session, I'm glad I was able to visit SJI during their physical open house. I think it can be difficult to appreciate (or otherwise) a school if you don't get to see and experience it firsthand.

That said, I liked what Mr. Justin Pierre shared (though he did this during the physical open house too) and him doing so in combination with Mrs. Chan (the SCGS principal) made the session worthwhile. All of this resonated more after the DSA, PSLE etc. and it helped to address some of my concerns with the IP/IB program offered at SJI.

No lah, I should have checked the school’s website before travelling there, as that would be the official source. But it was fine with us since the next school on our touring list was just down West Coast Road.

We were very impressed with our final stop, Clementi Town Sec. Besides the fantastically convenient location, the Principal’s talk was the best we have heard so far (she is very personable and to me that is important in a school leader). Their FSBB has been running for 4 years already with form classes organized according to CCAs (a smart choice).
No wonder the COP is 14.

My kids + us, fell in love with the school after attended their open house, and after comparing what we saw and felt there, with other schools’. For us we got to feel the vibe of the compound, how the senior students interacted with us, and get a very good sense of the school’s values add and ethos, after listening in person the principal’s speech. One example was through interacting with the senior students. In general, one school’s students gave me the impression of typical teenager reservations whereas another school’s senior students were relatively more relax and poised. (I found out later is it because even the principal treat the students as equal during informal situation- make small talks with students in canteen) Another practical advantage is you get to assess little thing like the travelling condition to the school (if the kid is going to take public transport) i.e any sheltering from bus stop/mrt station to school for raining days. Good luck parents.

Just want to highlight that most schools do not have the % of students going to JC / Poly, as most schools do not track the posting results of the students after O Level.

What they do have, is the % of students qualifying for JC and Poly, which may sound similar, but is not really the same.

I remember striking out a school when the principal refused to share their school's latest percentage of their graduates going to JC & Poly (despite parents were asking for it), stating the reason that because MOE in recent years are less focus on grades. So they want to create an environment that is healthy for the students. To each his own.

For me, I want my child to be happy in his learning journey during his secondary years, but I also hope he will be also motivated at the same time to achieve his best to go into higher institution of his choice. Therefore the school's value and the school's goal is very important to me.

I also striked out another school when the school didn't conduct any e-open house in 2020 & 2021. I understand that these 2 years were the most challenging years due to the pandemic. But other schools were able to rise up during the difficult times; to organise e-open houses, how come that particular school unable to do so? This shows a lot on their values, their attitude which will affects how they mould our kids. Needless to say, that particular school showed a drop in their COP (meaning their popularity drop in a year).

Therefore parents, please do attend as many Open House as you can. You may be surprised. Some schools, you may think is ordinary and nothing special but their yearly performance in CCAs / O-levels / N-levels graduating batches will surprise you. 🙂
