I agree. I guess most people treat midyear exams as a early-warning alarm, to let them know if their kids need tuition or to buck up. If the intent of removing the midyear exams is adjust the system so that everything is weighted on the end of the year final exam, then MOE should address the situation by decreeing that ALL schools have mock midyear exams; just that the marks will not be counted in the finals. This should be done in ALL schools, and not just SOME schools. This will put the concerns of many parents to rest.

Otherwise, there will be complaints that the Singapore education system is getting too elitist, in that those people that can afford to pay for these mock papers will have a edge over everyone else.

Just ask MOE to put back the mid year exam, and the whole problem is solved. All these nonsense private tutor / centre charging ridiculous exhorbitant $ 130, per mock paper, to disappear.

Since MOE is the one that started the problem by removing mid year exam, then for goodness sake, put it back lah ! SInce it is already so obvious that so many parents badly want the mid year exam to be back, for their kids.

Don't anyhow wreck or rock the boat, inside the MOE examination setting system, when it had been stablized for so many past decades (century), in terms of having mid year exam.

At the very most, just put back the mid year exam, mark the papers as per normal, return the marked scripts back to the class of students, to see where they have gone wrong. But don't enter the marks into the Report card.

all the parents & their children are keen to know : where their children stand, in terms of mid year exam ? So, let them take their mid year exam as.usual, just don't record their marks into Report card, that's all.

There's nothing wrong in charging for a service as long as they make clear what they are providing and provide what they promise to. If parents want to pay someone else to administer the tests under timed conditions and grade the papers, it's their choice. Some parents don't know where to get papers, or how to mark them, or can't impose timed exam conditions etc.
