The one doing hcl had A for cl subj while the other had A*. So focus only on cl solely allowed my kid to push up his cl grades. However, during that yr in p6, he was separated from his regular classmates during cl lessons as he had to join the non-hcl kids. In his sch, the std difference between the abilities of students in hcl and cl classes was very huge. The calibre of teachers assigned to the classes were also as such. We cannot blame the teachers who needed to use broken mandarin mixed with English to teach the class as majority of the students cl proficiency is not up to std to understand full fledge spoken mandarin. To me is good to know few more words. Very near to psle for dd2, I did have some worries of her mixing up the hcl and cl as I think there are some differences. <br /><br /><br />Cl was her weaker and most disliked subject before we received recommendation from school. Came PSLE, I kept reminding dd2 that her core subject is cl not hcl and…end of day I think she really treated hcl as an ‘extra’ subject…very relaxed before that paper. As of today, inside me, I m still hoping that we didnt make a wrong choice for going hcl tuition instead of focusing just on cl.</p>

Just take normal CL and Chinese SL B (in Year 11-12).<br />-For IP A, marginal advantage in clearing HCL at S4 O Level, but probably not worth a lot of pain and suffering (or disproportionate amount of time spent on this one class).<br />-For O level, slight advantage in passing HCL for the two bonus points.  However, the above qualifier applies (cannot spend so much time here that your other subjects end up worse).</p>
