I have 2 kids, one did hcl in p6, 1 switched to cl class at p6. The one doing hcl had A for cl subj while the other had A*. So focus only on cl solely allowed my kid to push up his cl grades. However, during that yr in p6, he was separated from his regular classmates during cl lessons as he had to join the non-hcl kids. In his sch, the std difference between the abilities of students in hcl and cl classes was very huge. The calibre of teachers assigned to the classes were also as such. We cannot blame the teachers who needed to use broken mandarin mixed with English to teach the class as majority of the students cl proficiency is not up to std to understand full fledge spoken mandarin. So if you and your kid opt to drop hcl, do have an adjusted mindset if there is a gap in teaching.

For my kids case, clearing hcl at Yr4 olevel is a huge advantage as they only have 1 olevel subject to focus on in yr4 IP and clearing it means no need to see cl again in jc1 which have many steep learning curves for the h1h2 subjs.

Very near to psle for dd2, I did have some worries of her mixing up the hcl and cl as I think there are some differences.


Cl was her weaker and most disliked subject before we received recommendation from school. Came PSLE, I kept reminding dd2 that her core subject is cl not hcl and…end of day I think she really treated hcl as an ‘extra’ subject…very relaxed before that paper. As of today, inside me, I m still hoping that we didnt make a wrong choice for going hcl tuition instead of focusing just on cl.

-For IP A, marginal advantage in clearing HCL at S4 O Level, but probably not worth a lot of pain and suffering (or disproportionate amount of time spent on this one class).

I concur with these thoughts from SG_KP1.

In an old post, I explained that the \"relationship\" between CL & HCL for Pri and Sec lvl looks something like this:

For Pri HCL, it's mainly the additional workload (how much more depends on sch/teacher), extra weekly lessons and having to sit for 2 more papers (HCL Paper 1 and 2).

The HCL students will get to practice more compo and compre - the frequent use descriptive words/phrases and language expression will come in handy for CL compo while the extra compre passages they encounter will help to strengthen their ability to analysis passage content and/or answer finding techniques.

Looking ahead, HCL Paper 1 helps prepare the students for story plotting, which is required for Sec level since there's no more given picture to write on, whereas Paper 2's exposure to 2 comprehension passages each time helps with Sec level too, as they have to read 4 MCQ + 2 OE (CL) or 3 OE (HCL) compre passages (train their understanding, analysis, \"stamina\" to read passages + answer questions etc.).

-Probably depends on the school and specific teacher-student compatibility, but you may also consider the composition of the regular CL class (attitudes towards the subject, different support needed, etc).

It’s the exact “excuse” I used to coax him to continue hcl this year - free tuition so that his cl gets better grade.

You are right too about the attitude of the cl kids vs hcl kids.
I need him to consider that more, before he eventually decides.


Yes - he is scoring in the range that will NOT get the “recommended drop hcl letter ” at the end of the year , thus he wants to be pro-active about it.

As for beyond P6:
-Probably no major difference if you want to pickup HCL again in S1.
-For IB, I don’t think there’s a reason to struggle with HCL. Just take normal CL and Chinese SL B (in Year 11-12).
-For IP A, marginal advantage in clearing HCL at S4 O Level, but probably not worth a lot of pain and suffering (or disproportionate amount of time spent on this one class).
-For O level, slight advantage in passing HCL for the two bonus points. However, the above qualifier applies (cannot spend so much time here that your other subjects end up worse).
