thanks for sharing your views :).

i sort of 'confronted' a veteran teacher before and since learnt that i am wasting my time trying to change their way of treating children/thinking etc. it is like how some of us parents feel that we should toughen our kids and not turn them into softies. so i rather spend my time teaching my son on my own capacity on what is acceptable behaviour even for adults. no point getting angry or all worked up cos these people who label other people's kids as stupid casually may have done it in a heat of a moment or are just pathetic people.
so long my boy is not to the extent of being traumatise (or that the teacher is those 1-2 period subjects or relief type), i just take it as part and parcel of life. if it is otherwise, hohoho....my husband said that i can be a witch replacing the w with a b.
for now, all these negative experiences are mitigated by the numerous positive ones that the Form teacher gave my boy, so, i'm contented. šŸ˜‰

I am speaking as a parent and I know there are teachers out there who perform very well but there are some who donā€™t. (Parents ganged up , so do teachers.)


As a parent, I donā€™t send my child to this or that particular school to be trained as a genius. However, as a parent itā€™s my responsibility to ensure that my child is in a safe environment. Yes, itā€™s not easy to keep track each and every kids that ā€˜contaminateā€™ our kids mind. Letā€™s do our very best, ya. However, we have rights to let the school knows that we are aware and care about out kids while they are schooling in their schools. So what there are veteran teachers? Big deal! Likewise, a doctor can cure my child illness is a good doctor!

We have to be humble also, our angels might not be angels at all. Itā€™s only reasonable if you find out from sources before confronting the teachers lah to save embarrassments.

Anyway, are you afraid of confronting the veteran teachers because you are not veteran as a parent? If you are, ā€¦Cā€™MON! Because of these so called veteran teachers that make you stopped ā€˜wastingā€™ your time for your kid? I am very sad because I notice a lot of parents talk like you and our kids growing up in an environment of not talking at the right time and right moment because their parents donā€™t talk at all.

Be brave!

Let the school know that your child is unhappy or whatever. I wish you well. Let me tell you this, I was so timid to confront my childā€™s teachers and regretted till today. I listened to them so much because they are veteran teachers mah. So what?!? Their styles of work only apply for us but not this generation.I am not saying that these veterans are oldies, but you gotta remember being old does not being they are wiser to many cases. Tell them that salt comes in many grades. In this generation, we should not compare the taste of salt with rice, we should compare salt and sand instead. Itā€™s about how refine we are in terms of our outlook. Very sarcastic of me, I know,but wattudu? I wish you well;-)

Based on your first paragraph alone, it has nothing to do with the relief teacher. It has to do with the school for having such teacher in the school.
How the teacher looks like may (not will, but may) determine if any feedback will be taken seriously; ie if young relief teacher vs veteran adjunct teacher, which one the school will likely take that further step to ensure that something is done? :roll: don't want to waste my time if i am going to be 'up against' veteran teacher cos chances are they will say they eat salt more than you eat rice :roll: .

yes, agree that the sch should not have such teachers; what to do? just tell my boy to ignore such remarks lor. my boy is not the one being punished, so i leave it to his parents to pursue the matter.

relief teacher punished a boy; boy told to repeat silly actions in front of class; class laughed; relief teacher called the whole class stupid and asked why they laugh; one boy replied cos it's funny; relief teacher shushed the boy and asked the punished boy why he did what he did and told him to go back to his seat.

??? although the story did not quite link up (esp. the last part), my boy was quite taken aback from the word from the teacher's mouth. when i go to sch during PTM, will go see how this teacher look like. :roll:

I am declaring right now! I am STUPID! As a parent to an only child, I am making mistakes EVERYDAY because Iā€™m being first hand in everything, everyday, and every year,because heā€™s growing each day! Gosh, I am learning new things everyday! (High 5! ;-D)

Very difficult to make snap judgements on 3rd hand information really. People are human, have you never said somthing in the heat of the moment that you did not regret later on?

I agree in principle, but we do not know the exact situation, threadstarter did not elaborate. Learning problems or academic failure does not warrant such a harsh scolding. But who knows, maybe the child in question, really did something stupid, like shoplifting or fighting with a dangerous weapon or something? Until we know more, we cannot say that definitely a teacher is wrong in scolding a child as \"stupid\".

People who do stupid actions were definitely being stupid at that point in time. Period.

He has to learn not to be too sensitive. Even though a teacher should not say such a thing just because of academic failure, we must also acknowledge the fact that the mouth belongs to other people, frankly speaking, others have the right to say whatever they want, even if it's wrong. Unless we staple the person's mouth shut, even sending them to jail will not stop them from saying whatever they want.

Because of the mentality of overprotective parents, children nowadays are growing up weak and over-sensitive, unable to take harshness. This is not good for them.

Just sharing that sometimes kids did not understand what the teacher meant fully and will take certain words into offence.
It's good for parents to clarify and explain.

We can't possibly asked our child to 'quit' everytime someone uses a nasty word on them. Imagine how are they going to survive NS (for the boys) and the real working world outside when we shelter them too much?

I hope I will be a protective mum, but not over-protective. Sometimes I need my hubs to remind me when I become over-protective. šŸ™‚ It's rather normal for parents now to feel this way.

If a person really did something really really stupid, then the person should be scolded as such. Our society is molly-coodling the next generation, raising a generation of weaklings that cannot be scolded even if theyā€™re in the wrong.


Of course, if the scolding is not justified, then the teacher is in the wrong.

For example, if the student plays a dangerous prank like pull out the chair of another student as heā€™s about to sit down, causing him to crash onto the floor, potentially breaking the spine and causing paralysis, then the prankster should be scolded as stupid.

Need to assess the situation, the severity of the words used to scold a person must match the offense.
