<![CDATA[Which Maths Olympiad / Competition Holds Most Weight?]]>My son is in P6 now and has been participating in various maths olympiads.


1) NMOS is P5. He scored Silver
2) SASMO in P5. Scored Merit
3) SMOPS in P6. Scored Bronze
4) RI Pri Maths World Contest. Nothing.
5) UNSM. He scored distinction

Question1. Are the competitions of similar difficulty? My son’s results are all different for the various competitions. Does any maths expert have a view on the difficulty and difference between each?

Question 2. Which is more highly regarded for DSA applications? On the forum I see the most reference to SMOPS, followed by NMOS. Does anyone know.

My dd in P4 is interested in maths and asked me to find out more about DSA Maths for her πŸ˜…

She was in the E2K Maths which has been suspended now because of covid.

I am considering sending her for Maths Olympiad training and competitions and was recommended to try Maths Classroom and Maths Hub.

Any reviews or suggestions Welcome!
You can ask for a trial lesson and speak to your DD after the lesson. If she finds it useful, try out for one term. If she finds the pace too fast or too slow, go for another teacher/ center.

If the child has strong interest and aptitude, it is possible to do very well in MO competitions without regular training.

You can track her progress using past years papers. Eg., NMOS past years papers:-

Just wondering prior to this year, how do the students get selected for IMSO :?

This is not firsthand info but i heard that prior to this year, RI does the selection for the science olympiad and nush or nus does the selection for the maths. The IMSO is pretty recent.

Ya, the list is very long. That's why I'm wondering 400 students invited for special round translate to ??? Gold, Silver or Bronze (?)??? Or all 400 are Gold and Silver??? Considering yearly maybe about 4000+ students join the competition?

Number seems a lot, but come to think about it, it is only about 10% of total yearly student population that join the competition.

Data from the NMOS 2008/2009 Past year question book:

In 2008, 56 GOLD, 288 SILVER, 476 BRONZE, 616 HONOURABLE MENTION, 2735 PARTICIPATION

In 2009, 62 GOLD, 336 SILVER, 538 BRONZE, 1081 HONOURABLE MENTION, 2902 PARTICIPATION

For these 400 children, Chances of getting silver is very high.

Someone told me for RMSO, they only choose 40 for Maths and 40 for Science training. From these, they will further choose 5 for Maths team and 5 for Science team for IMSO. Very privilege and top few indeed.

It is TOP 15 participants from each section for Training.

From those,they choose 6 from each section for IMSO.

Although at primary school level there is an International Maths and Science Olympiad (IMSO), which is \"international\" in nature.

May I seek your kind advice, although the question might have already been discussed in some other threads:

1. Is Maths Hub the most commonly MO school most kids go to, assuming that the kid is not good enough to be selected for training by the school?

2. Age wise, P4 is a suitable age to start, too early might deter the kid for interest in Maths if he/she does not have enough aptitude for the subject?

I browsed through some MO books at Popular bookshop. Think even for the most elementary (meant for 7-8 yrs old) questions I also a bit of time to solve them :?:

1. Medals will be awarded to the TOP THIRTY participants of the competition based on their combined scores in both the preliminary and special round. The TOP TEN individual winners will also receive book vouchers. In addition, the TOP THREE individual winners will also receive cash prizes sponsored by the Singapore Mathematical Society.

2. Prizes will be awarded to the TOP TEN school teams based on the combined scores of the top FOUR scorers from the same school in both the preliminary and the special round. In addition, the TOP THREE school team will receive book vouchers as well.

3. All participants will receive a certificate showing their level of achievement (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Honorable Mention and Participation).
