Brisbane is a wonderful city and I’m confident she’ll have a wonderful time here. I’ve lived in Brisbane my whole life and it has a thriving student community.

Tenancy laws are tricky to navigate when you’re new to any new country. Without local rental history, securing favourable accomodation is a little more tricky to manage. Especially since we’re currently undergoing a major housing and rental crisis at the moment.

My advice would be to secure student accomodation for her first year here at a minimum. While this is more expensive, it’s a lot more secure. Definitely a higher likelihood of securing accomodation here vs the public rental market.

You have two options in terms of student accomodation. First, securing accomodation on campus (depending on which university she’s attending) that is run through seperate bodies owned by the University. That would be my first pick. Second, there are private student accomodation facilities.

Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.

First time for all of us to have someone go overseas to study. We are looking into various accommodation options and have some questions:

What are the real estate rules (don’t know if this is the right word) about signing short-term lease

Any leasing laws we need to know

What to expect regarding this subject

Other than paying the rental fee and utilities, is there anything else like council fees or anything else to pay for?

Appreciate any advice / tips from parents whose child has gone to Australia recently for uni.

TIA!
Hihi! My hubby and I once studied in the Uni of Queensland in Brisbane. There are countless real estate agencies serving the international students near uni campuses in Brisbane. For an easier starting place, u may want to look at the website of UniLodge. They specialize in renting to uni students, so it’s a very safe agency to start with. We lived in The Manors, within walkable distance (ahem…a few kilometres) of UQ’s campus. It is a large gated condo, where many Singaporean (and other Asian) students share apartments with each other. U can either rent directly from the agent, or in subsequent years co-rent with friends to split costs.

The prices quoted are per week (not per month). There are much cheaper options like share a large landed house with 6 other people but the weather insulation tends to be bad in those. Very hot in summer and too cold in winter…

Not sure the latest rules but all the best in your search!
