Somebody who can play by ear is like that, they just need to have basic piano training and then can play just about anything already!

For me, my greatest regret in my life is that I did not learn to play the piano in my childhood. Like church music I can play using guitar scores!

But nothing can beat being able to use all 10 fingers properly trained to make beautiful music!

I mourn the time lost as now \"lau liow lah\", fingers stiff and no time for lessons and go for piano exams. I am pinning my hopes on my DS now 2.5 yo. He likes music and if he is interested I will put him through piano lessons.

But only if he likes it. I thought I was the only \"seow\" one. Good for us bro!

Erh...the metronome swinging the background...tick, tock, tick, tock, seems vaguely familiar to me. The one use for counting the timing izzit right? Yup, we must be in the same age group! I love the melodic minors! Somehow, I was good at aural and all that clapping, timing, and even singing. But the singing is keh one cos now can only croak, haha!!

And yep, some people really have the ear like your hubby. How do they do that? It's so astonishing!! I also feel like I wasted money because I wasn't really passionate about it,. Think I was more worried about passing exams . (Eeks, I'm completely Singaporean!)

So now, I don't even put my son through it. I tried but he's never liked music. Don't want to force him to practice.

Blobbi

Reply to Problem of staying next door to a talented pianist on Mon, 24 May 2010 06:59:55 GMT

DesertWind:

For me, I bought a piano many years ago just to learn to play ONE song - Pachelbel's Canon !
I am crazy over this piece of music and found it enchanting. There was a ... spatial symmetry that I loved. My teacher was the typical, rap your knuckles, didn't like modern music type, but that was fine with me actually. I just loved Chopin and disliked Bach even though that was probably the most symmetrical, hmm. There is this feeling of being in tune with the music that one can achieve with enough practice (maybe become delirious, haha!). But as I got older, it became a real chore having to balance schoolwork, reading (I was a junkie), and practicing, and I started to dislike it. Plus I was, em, \"advised strongly\" to take up French which took up a lot of time. So I saw Grade 8 as the final end. I made a pact with my parents and, well, I guess I held up my end of the bargain pretty well.

Psst buds, can't be me lah.
