Hi all,

From the response of this thread, it seems not so many students taking BSP.
May I know whether because of the workload is too heavy over four years? It is non examable subject, but definitely have project assignment to do. Is there any parent or student can help share the workload and effects requited?
My DD now is at sec 2, considering to apply BSP next year without scholarship.

I have another child in a SAP school and there is 1 BSP class in upper sec. Hence I guess, 30 kids or so.

dear doodbug. tha k your for reply. your 20 students or fewer is exactly the answer i am looking for. DHS has appro 9 classes each 35/38 students in each cohort. i would also presume not more than 50 in DHS taking up BSP .

My impression is 20 if not fewer. SCGS only has 4 IP classes. It is also a racially diverse school (i.e. significant number of non-Chinese and girls who do not read Chinese as their MT.) There are not that many girls who opt to do BSP. Even amongst those who do, not everyone applies for / takes up the scholarship.

sorry rhinotroy, which school is your child in?

I can only speak for SCGS. BSP is not by invitation by HCL teachers. You as a student opt for BSP if you are interested in it. Not that many girls opt for it. I don’t recall there were interview selection rounds.

dear doodbug, may i ask how roughly how many students in BSP for year 3 in SCGS and SNGS? is it like 30 students or 50 students? is it by invitation by HCL teachers due to students Chinese is more powderful? my child class in year 2 majority of them DO NOT like HCL and he is the only one expressing interest for BSP during the june subject combination survey. i understood the students also need to go for a couple rounds of interviews before being selected to study BSP. is it the same in SCGS and SNGS ?

Hi. I don't think a student will be able to take triple science anywhere in Year 5 and 6. There are only four A Level subject classes, and one of them has to be contrasting. Hence, it is (often) Math + Chem + Physics or Bio + Contrasting for the Science kids. If one takes BSP in Sec 3 and Sec 4, the Contrasting subject in JC could be CSC (China Studies in Chinese).

I do not know if DHS allows triple science + BSP in upper secondary. For reference, HCI does not.

Can someone share more about bicultural studies? I have read all the information from MOE website but would like to know more about the topics they study and the projects they are doing, is Chinese lit or history difficult to manage n if those China immersion trips compulsory.

What makes one choose bcp over other program? Is it a waste to give up the chance to study 3 sciences if one is scoring A+ for science n maths for sec 3 subject combinations?

There must be a good reason why Chem is needed, but not Bio? Maybe those who did medicine in Uni can better understand the rationale.

I think only nursing and pharmacy requires H2 Bio.

wonderm, so far all the while, one class of abt 30+. They are prepared to open up to two classes. Yes and that's why we want to find out more. She has asked one senior in BSP and so far its good comments. Just hope to hear from more.

My thinking is, instead of choosing physics + chem + Bio (elective), why not give up the Bio for BSP? If she not taking Bio as elective now, she would not be able to choose Bio in year 5. But I think its fine lor. What do you all think?

It seems that Sec 3 subject combination for different schools are very different. I don't know what are the trade-offs your DD has to make if she were to take BSP.

These trade-off aside, I think the most important thing is whether your DD has the interest in the programme and if her Chinese is strong enough for the programme. In terms of the programme content, I think RV should be giving them briefings or she can clarify with her teachers. In HCI, BSP also has many immersions overseas, this can be an attraction to some, but a drawback to others. The last thing I would consider if I am in your shoes would be what other programmes are available in Sec 3, anything else that interest your DD even more than BSP?

Sorry as I don't have any kids who have gone through BSP, these are the only pointers I could think of. All the best to your DD!
