But now think it’s harsh and very unfair to those teachers who are really dedicated. Sure, there are black sheep (as there will be elsewhere), politics and overcompetitive parents. At end of day, most schools are places you can feel safe leaving your kids at while you work; knowing they are learning somewhat useful stuff.

At this age, children a good at memorizing and regurgitating. But at this age it’s more important that they get the concepts. If they do not understand the concepts at P1, it gets more difficult at later stages.

For example, a friend’s P1 child showed amazing addition and subtraction skills after going through abaccus lessons, but when I presented her with a handful of coins and asked her to pick out enough money to pay for ice cream for the both of us, she just couldn’t. This child could work on paper addition and subtraction to the hundreds and thousands, and I had enough coins in my hand to give her several choices of coins to choose, but she just didn’t know how to! Too much emphasis on book memorization and too little practical skills taught.

If the school has ranking system then this is what it is. By all means we can complain and pull supports to disagree with the system. Parents whose kids have good results or kids that at this moment don’t do well but can be pushed to excelerate and be in the frontier later, they would not mind having ranking system. Parents who have kids struggling and at the bottom may not want to be ranked as it doesn’t do good to the kids. My kids are normal , not the extreme bright ones and not the struggling type, so I am fine if the school wants or does not want to rank the students in class. Whatever the school does, just make sure every kid can enjoy school and not let positioning or intense competition to make them feel miserable.
