<![CDATA[Help! My ds does not know the value of money]]>Today while in the car, ds was peeling off the plastic cover from the Kids Explorer membership card that I purchased. When I told him not to tear, he said: 'Never mind, spoil just buy another one. I know you & mummy have a lot of money'. :slapshead:


Now I suspect that ds's attitude is largely due to me as I also have a lax attitude towards money. But at least for big ticket items, I know how to control myself. There is a danger that ds may be worse off than me in that aspect. :scared:

How do I gently teach him the value of money? Pls don't suggest that I make him sell newspaper cos I'll never have the heart to do so. Best is that ds can learn the lesson without any physical discomfort. Your suggestion pls.

OT abit on animal kaiser. It's the boy things in sch, like beyblades. Peer pressure & common topic. At first, I didn't agree. But he actually increased his vocabulary & drew all the animals quite well. At K2, he can read & research about animals at library & tell me about facts on animals I don't even know. Now I'm hoping to entice him to recognise Chinese characters from Chinese animal kaiser cards, but mummy needs to do research...Another trick question- do u learn more from animal kaiser or beyblades??

Back to $$, since he is into the cards, I told him the boss card cost $50 but I'm not buying. But I printed a version from website on photopaper & charge him $50 to put in his card folder. Then I explained how many bowls of ramen (his favourite food) he can eat with that. He passed me his piggy bank reluctantly & insisted there is $50 worth of coins in there. So we started counting...of course I returned the $ back to him but I think he got some ideas on how much is $50

I have a deal with her...ie every full score in her english & chinese spelling will earn her 50 cents each...so every week she will have $1 to her piggy bank. She is thrilled and keep counting her coins (a way to learn Math too) to make it to $60 so that she can pay for her art lessons and continue her passion....I told her she has to earn to pay her hobbies though my plan is to bank the $$$ into her savings acct πŸ˜‰


Now her brother 4 yrs is picking the same idea, trying to learn 50cents each time he can tell me what did he learn from his weekly speech and drama lesson (in a way, to revise and understand the learning process). He told me he has afew things he likes to learn...piano, tennis or golf...I support his \"ideas\" but he needs to earn enough to register for at least one course that he can afford.....and yes, my plan is to save into his bank acct too.

Yah he does love both DD and DS a lot. All daddies do what. But he will also not stand any nonsense from them. In this case, really DD has a point. How can any parent begrudge their children their joy? And I think he knows he better not go on and on as he himself is quite a spend thrift when it comes to things that is of his interest.

Something similar happened

Once after a round of budgetting for our short getaway - factored in cost of meal , we were dining at this nice cosy restaurant.
After the main meal ( the cost of which DS has added and found just meeting the budgetie ),
I order their fav dessert for all , DS quickly checked the menu card and asked me sternly , \"Are you sure we can afford that?\" :nunchuk:

I tried to sush him and send the waiter away quickly, and i tot other diners people turning to give us stares. :oops:

No more budgetting with DS . 😎

I on the other hand will say that we 'succeeded'. Succeeded so well that it back fired.

Brought the kids out for a movie last weekend. DH was grumbling about how a day out at the movies can cost us up to $100, tix, popcorn, drinks, dinner. He went on and on about how all the prices have gone up, etc, etc, etc.
