but how about kids' scores/rankings? i found some parents are very eager to compare the kids' (lower primary kids) results.....

were the questions one parent asked me recently....

is it common to compare ? :?
This is a very interesting topic which I think we should make poll.

I try not to but sometimes I do ask. I really feel is not so healthy but we are human. I mean what if my child score higher or lower it is only a test or exam. But I really feel annoyed if parents ask me about my child's score. Especially those ask for the sake of comparing. I just told them which band and said forgot the exact marks. After a few time they catch my hint.

I will. I know where DS1 stands. He can't strive for very high mark nor borderline pass. For mark that stands above 75, i would be happy. Of cos, i can't stand if he makes careless mistake :rant:


For my own case, i will ask DS who gets the highest for ________ test? He always blur blur and replies,\" Dun noe, dun noe....\" :roll: But i dun go to parents and ask how many marks their DD/DS score, instead i ask them,\" Your DS/DD doing ok? Pass can already, dun ask for sky lah......\" :oops: Only ask 1 or 2 parents, not all of them.

I agree. But I know of parents who are very angry with their kids for scoring 80+ marks. 80+ marks is already A, right ? Parents are not only aiming for straight As, they are only happy when their kids are number 1, which may mean 100 marks for every subject.

I still don't understand why so many parents and teachers think that 80+ is not good enough.

In A levels and university, students only know their grades in the final exams. There is no difference between 85 and 99 marks.

But in primary school, even if a child gets 99 marks, she may be ranked number 10 ! Since there may be kids scoring 99.1, 99.2, 99.3, ..., 99.9 :stupid:

We are not into results comparison simply because even if someone is doing better, it still has no bearing on us or our child. Relative results are pegged to ability and luck. If my child is not straight \"A\"s material I am not going to drill her until she becomes straight \"A\"s just to be the same as the next child. If my child is not as lucky under exam conditions and do worser than a child whom I know the ability, I am not going to bash my child up simply because I know in reality, she has the ability to do to her next level of ability has she not been unlucky under exam conditions. But if it is due to an attitude problem, then I would be unhappy with the attitude than the results. Not-up-to-par result against her usual self is just an indicator of the attitude and there may be some deep-seated issues that I need to be concerned about.


I am happy to understand and know the true ability of my child. Results are just processes they have to go through due to the system and that alone cannot change my perception of my child's ability, so why need comparison?

The only time I need to understand relative results in a cohort is I know if she is performing to par according to school's benchmark or the school sets too difficult a paper and causes a Black Monday.

Totally agree. The important thing is the attitude and the effort. Doing the best that they can should be enough!

OT already. :oops: :politebleah:

I find that it is ok to punish a child for bad behaviour but not for poor results. Poor results is usually due to teaching/learning pedagogy mismatch.
