This is very informative.

I am planning a trip for June (I know people visit Harbin in winter for the ice festival and all, but sorry I am not up to it - it’s tooooo cold.) I understand Harbin is pleasant to walk around in June as well and it isn’t blistering hot unlike in the more inland / Western China areas.

I have 7 days. Would it make sense to fly into Dalian, and out of Harbin, i.e. 3 days Dalian, 1 day Shenyang, 3 days Harbin? I’ll take the high speed rail from Dalian to Shenyang, and from Shenyang to Harbin.
Can Jilin be skipped or is it a must-go?
If it is too rushed, then I’ll have to choose between Dalian or Shenyang + Harbin.
Was the 沈阳故宫 nicely preserved?

City's like Moscow. You can ask littleprince for updates.

Shenyang - I only visited 沈阳故宫 (Qing emperors' original palace. They later moved to Ming's Forbidden City in BJ) and Marshal Zhang's Mansion. You must know about the Northern Warlords to appreciate the latter.

Dalian - Very beautiful and lots of Russian orthodox buildings (some castles built during Bo Xilai's admin), French boulevards, police riding on horses.

Ryojun/Lvshun /Port Arthur - I joined a day tour from Dalian to visit the Russo-Japanese Prison Site @ Ryojun as it's far from city centre. I'm into Dark Tourism. I'll visit Unit 731 Museum @ Harbin in future.

NB: Ideally, read up on the 1st Sino-Jap war and the Treaty of Shimonoseki (Liaodong, Korea vassal-state, Taiwan and Penghu island ceded to the Japs); Russo-Jap War and Treaty of Portsmouth to deeply appreciate Ryojun / Lvshun.

Liaoning was ceded to the Japs > returned to Qing > leased to Russia > seized back by Jap > returned to PRC > leased to USSR after WW2. So it's part Russian, part Jap, part Korean, part Chinese! Part Korean because after the fall of Pyongyang, many North Koreans fled to this region. Mummies have watched enough KDramas to know the history of Joseon Dynasty I'm sure.

There're a lot of authentic Korean, Jap, Russian, Mongolian F&Bs there.

~Jilin~

Next on my list is Jilin's Changchun aka the former capital of Manchukuo, Hsinking. I want to visit Puyi's imperial palace in Changchun, but I'll go after 2022 when they're done with the restoration of all puppet Manchukuo's government buildings.

.010675zeit

Reply to Travel: China - Harbin on Wed, 28 Aug 2019 07:46:40 GMT

Also at Yabuli, there is China’s longest alpine slide

Just make sure you have waterproof shoes/boots. Richer face moisturiser is important too to prevent cutting.

Do keep your handphone/camera warm in your inner pocket else they can die anytime (auto off/frozen and then may have to wait for a while to warm up before you can power on again).

Good to bring one or two thermal bottles with you for warm or hot water/beverages when you go walk walk as all liquids in normal bottles turn cold and may not be comfortable for drinking, esp if you are going with younger kids.

My then 10 yo nephew and 12 yo niece had no issues with the weather (we were skiing while there almost all the time with Club Med).

Have fun!

hercules

Reply to Travel: China - Harbin on Mon, 15 May 2017 23:22:36 GMT

Hi

Am planning for a trip this coming Dec.
