If the idea is one of appreciation, then whether one's parents are poor is not a consideration.

Sorry, don't mean to be-labour this, but as usually occurs, a position is taken (give free tickets/subsidised tickets to relatives of athletes), then a reason is brought up to support this, then rebutted, then another reason is brought up, rebutted again, then we go back to reason 1, and from different posters.

2 different issues;

1) Should relatives of YOG athletes be given free tickets out of appreciation for their participation? Perhaps, perhaps not. If so, then the cost cited by Lynette Ng ($1200) should not be a factor, it should not even be raised. YOG athletes should receive 2 free tickets for each match they attend, to be given to relatives. Plain and simple.

2) On the other hand, is the issue around the cost of the tickets and the ability for some parents to pay? If the decision is made that YOG athletes will NOT be receiving free tickets, but we want to help the disadvantaged parents, then absolutely we need to be applying a means test before hand out freebies.

Don't want to come across as argumentative, but we need to be clear which issue we are dealing with.

3Boys

Reply to YOG in Singapore on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 15:06:12 GMT

daisyt:
The hope for gold from sailing is gone with the wind. She's the era where the garmen let parents choose either the dialect or hanyupinyin surname for the kid...actually, it's still happening today. So Isabelle Li's parents are Mr and Mrs Lee.

Good job, gal! :celebrate:[/quote]Yes Isabelle did a good job.

Frankly.... my 1st question was \"Is she a pure Singaporean\"????

I remember when Feng Tian Wei won China in recent table tennis match, my boss (China Chinese) was so disappointed. I told him that.... well it's like China Vs China. it's just that these foreign talent wearing Spore flag were not given the same opportunity in China and they found it in Singapore.

So I am really proud that Isabelle is not a foreign talent and our very own home grown talent. That is very encouraging for our children. It's a hope that everyone has a chance so long as you've the passion and the talent. So it's not limited to foreign talent only.

MMM

Reply to YOG in Singapore on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 07:15:12 GMT

KSP:
They should be 1st or 2nd in the medal tally. :?

vlim:
I guess it is because this is the first YOG..so many of the country young athletes are not so well prepared..

KSP,
Sad to say, USA n many of d top sporting nations' best in
dis age group chose not to participate.
China is hosting d next YOG in Nanjing,
so dat could explain China's interest in making
dis YOG a success.

Vlim,
I suggest dat is not a valid point.
d support for dis YOG idea was not unanimous even within IOC.
Some countries were not fully supportive.
There is little coverage in US major sports media.
d Olympics itself is a huge brand name
but u don't see many big international brands supporting YOG
doesn't dat tell u something?

We r oredi in it, $387 mil deep
so might as well make d best of it.

Way2GO
