I am thinking to hire a maid to take care of children at home after school.
Any advice which option is better for children - send to after school care or with maid at home?

Last time I do hear of arrangement whereby after school, the kid will go to nanny’s house. There nanny will make sure they eat, bath, rest etc. But nowadays I think the additional expectation is supervision of homework. If there is anyone doing such private after school care, I am sure it would be high demand as well!

With no other better centres in my neighbourhood, I employed a maid then. For 3 years my maid was very good. Hwr, she left and we had a new maid, now in her 3rd month and we are still monitoring her. I have tried to look for a BASC but still can’t find a suitable one. In a dilemma as the current maid is not very stable and if she decides to quit and employing another maid gets too expensive, and we still can’t find a BASC, we are stuck.

It's not cheap to have a maid nowadays. Furthermore, it is not guaranteed to be good. You may end up worrying about your child's safety instead.

Put the child at student care...cheaper and lesser worries.
We have no ideas what is going on in the maid's brain. I feared being chopped up or poisoned if I was strict with my maid back then.

If child is at upp primary, maid doesn’t need to look after him/her…just cook lunch for 2, and she can get housework done and dinner as well.

The cons:
Maid cannot control child.
If child can have shower after school at the after school care, it will be more comfortable especially on days when there is PE. Parents can be sure homework is done when kids return home.

Else, look for a good and reputated centre. Maid…too much horror stories thou i do hear some good ones.

but i think the student care center teachers are quite strict with the students and they do know what is expected of them.Thus, not to worry.
Also you can look on a more positive side, with the guidance of teachers all of them would behave in somewhat the same way and would get punished for the same reasons.This will teach them right from wrong and with influence from peers, mayb it will be a good thing.
For example , peer pressure to quickly finish their work before they can go out to play together.they have to wait for everyone to finish the assigned task before getting free time.

My elder girl was in student care last year. She is a very good & helpful girl as per her student care teacher. However, this year when she is not in student care, she behave not so. She is lazy and no self-discipline at all. Everyday I go home from work, she is still in her uniform, homework not done.I'm so tired. I have a maid, but end up she control the maid & not the maid control her. So I would think in student care still better. Maybe also depends on your children.

Hi chng,

If possible I would prefer not to put the kids at home with a maid. Putting them in after sch care will allow them to interact and socialise with other children too.

However if they are at home, they may not do their work and may end up watching tv/playing com games etc.However this gives them more freedom and you will have to teach them to discipline themselves which is also good cos they will learn to have self-discipline.

It’s really up to you and your children to decide.And if they can be self-disciplined , no need for student care.Also i find that in student care centers there may be bullying and the teachers can be quite bossy.

One good thing about hiring the maid is there will be someone to look after your kids plus extra help to do household chores.
