Turn off data and 3G. And yes, it does cache a small area of the last visited map.<br /><br />If yours can't, maybe it is older iOS version..? Try updating to iOS4 and try..?<br /><br />In summary.. if iPad can there is no reason why iPhone cannot..<br /><br />It is not surprising if the device can cache a small area of the Map for offline use. But Google Map will NOT work if there is no data connection. How did your friend get Google Map to work, that is the mystery.<br /><br />Can share how your friend preload the Maps?
