It is conducted by retired school teacher. The same teacher teaches CL S&D in SAP primary school as a form of CCA. In my kids' school, she only teaches a selected group of students who were recommended by teachers. She came highly recommended by my P3's CL teacher for ability to show results after the kids attended her program. I know alot of her students are from SAP schools like TNS, Aitong, MBS, Nanyang,etc...

This year, she also started the class for K1 and K2 at the parents' request. I started to put my 2 older kids with her mid last year. We attended the year end concert and was very impressed with her student quality. Singapore kids having chinese accent when they perform rao kou ling and xiang sheng. Can't believe our ears and a friend who attended the performance asked me if the kids + teacher are from China. But off stage, they are back to their Sporean accent. Really interesting behaviour.

Her class focuses on rao kou ling and also saying rao kou ling and playing kuai ban. This involves rhythmic and brain coordination as well. It also requires the kids to memorise their stuff. They are also being taught new rao kou ling every week and are expected to remember those. Given her age, she is like a granny to the kids and does tell the kids off if their behaviour is not appropriate etc... she will correct them.

Some of the positive aspects I see in my kids are :
* As part of SA, they are now required to recite passages aloud in class. This is a easy task for my P2 be it in EL or CL. In the recent school assessment, he scored high on voice projection, contact with audience and confidence. For CL, his pronunication helped.
* It helps to increase their CL words recognition beyond school textbooks.
* It's good help for oral exams given the growing emphasize on ability to speak the language.
* My K1 after attending the program since beginning of the year have better CL pronunciation. When she does some of those passage, we can hear that she now makes an effort to pronounce them well. She become conscious of her pronunication. When she recite a passage, I can hear that it's very different from when she 1st started.

As this program is run by this teacher in particular. I feel that she is a rare local talent in Singapore. My only hope is that she stays healthy and fit and she is able to teach my youngest child till she is at least P6.

MMM

Reply to speech and drama classes on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 09:01:57 GMT

Regarding level of difficulty in fun chinese, I think it’s quite high. Teacher told me that she includes chinese idioms in most of the texts.

For my N2 boy, the year started off simple (eyes, nose, hands, feet), but gradually kids are exposed to more difficult words.

Yet the layout is very simple and non-cluttered. And the story is simple to understand.

In SHHK, I see a mix of teachers from PRC and also SG - their level of chinese is impeccable.

S&D is simply that - more on enunciating, drama stuff. There are 2 teachers in the class in cherry tots, for the S&D classes at K level, there is only 1 teacher - but they run around (each teacher take charge of a certain section).

Fun Chinese (from N1 to K1) is more on chinese language (akin to Berries) - a booklet is distributed each week, and kids also practise writing strokes/words (depending on level). There are 3 teachers in each class. Kids start off with 1-1 reading on last week’s text. They do stuff related to current week’s materials (if it’s on rice, the teachers even bring rice for kids to eat).

Kids have been in SHHK for the past 2+ years. DS1 is now in S&D plus the Chinese K2 prep class (Fun chinese ends at K1). DS2 is in cherry tots plus Fun Chinese. No regrets despite that we have to make 2 trips on Sundays to and fro the centre in TPY.

There was an earlier question on intake. Registration start around Oct each year. Priority given to existing students and then clan members and finally members of public. But during the year, if there is vacancy, kids can join the class midway. FYI, there are only 3 terms in 1 year - so actually the fees are very reasonable.
