Just to start the ball rolling,I came across 2 interesting Primary Science assessment books (recently released in 2010) at Popular book store, today. Looks quite good imho and pls advise if you have bought them and your comments.

Wonder if the GEP qns are relevant for mainstream PSLE? Else which are for GEP and whch are for PSLE relevant, they did not label them. Is Jason Lim a NIE trained teacher in the past?

This book is not really very tough.. I dont think it is cater for GEP students... Also the MCQ questions are rather easy... of course there are a few OE questions that are challenging!! Take note , i say \"a few\"..

jedamum, good question. I've only tried their English for P3, don't find it good. The \"marking scheme\" and suggestions are quite 'surface'...for me, just a gimmick. To be fair, that's the one and only time I tried.

I don't usually buy new publications...if I do, it's usually 1-2 books and for my younger child going to P1. Not much damage at this level. Got the P5/6 Science for son...will let him try it out for weekly practice.

I only bought the Science P5/6 Teachers' Circle...as well as P1 English & Math. Since I haven't bought it before, I only got the Science.

I really hope so...For SA1 and SA2, he has managed to score the full marks for Section A but he just couldn't answer his Section B questions according to 'PSLE standard', so the teachers refused to award him the marks. It's possible to score 100 for Science...as seen from the result slip (overall standard/average/median scores). Science is his best subject, so if he can do well, it will pull up the overall higher. Not to mention, his confidence as well.

I had bought this copy and ask DD to verify the question with the answer key provided to learn how to answer the open and end quesiton in a better way.

There was about 2 question after every Revision Chapter showing the answer that score 0 marks vs the answer score full marks.

The answer key has the Detailed Solutions as well as Teacher's Explanations.

There are 3 aspects I concentrate on when I teach science. It has so far guaranteed results becuase I've trained kids to become 1st in school in science, even though some of them are not locals.


Firstly,
The facts muct be right. Without the right content knowledge, things can go very wrong. For example, if the student does not know that stell is a magnetic material and magnetism cannot oass through it, then he will answer the question wrongly.

Secondly,
the process skills must be there. The questions asked at PSLE are targeted at process skills. If a student does know how to design an experiment to meet the aim of the experiment, of course he will get the question that checks this skill wrong.

Lastly,
the answering skills. Very often, students make a wrong choice of words or did not answer fully. Words like 'prevent' may be too absosolute to be used in some situations and another word could be more suitable to bring out the right meaning.

She just cannot handle the way to answering the question. She knows the answer but always wrong in phrasing....
