<![CDATA[Which is the best thermometer to buy for babies?]]>Hi


I have 2 thermometers - OMRON ear thermometer and CADI ear/forehead thermometer - but find that both give inaccurate readings when compared to the doctor’s thermometer.

In your opinion, which is the best brand and how much did you pay for it?

Would like to share with all fellow mums (and dads) this great love which I had stumbled across!

I am a mum of two young kiddies both currently below the age of 4. Elder girl A is 3.5y and Didi B is 1y.

Back when A was a baby in 2013/2014, the in-ear thermometer was (and still is) very popular so as a first time mom, not knowing anything, followed the crowd and bought that for her.

It's ok to use and served me well. However, when B came along two years or so later, it died on me forcing me to search again for a new thermometer to use for the kids.

As they are young, they fall sick with fever coughs and cold often, so having a good thermometer on hand is so very important!

And I found the SMARTTEMP! Someone had shared a video on Facebook and it intrigued me, so I got one to try love it for the ease and convenience it brings me as a busy mum!

The Smarttemp is a Bluetooth Thermometer which allows real-time temperature monitoring via an App on your mobile phone. HOW COOL IS THAT?!
It can also alarm to alert you when fever spikes.. OH MY! Such a useful feature for me as a full time working mum because sleep is so so so important for me to function well the next day. Having an alarm to alert feature, seriously saves me a lot of trouble having to wake every few hours through the night to check their temperature!

I love how small, thin and compact the Smarttemp is. The device is waterproof and 100% baby safe with no fear of B accidentally swallowing the tiny battery hence it can go into the bath or measure your bath water temperature.

I simply have to stick it on under the armpit and reach for my phone which is always close by whenever I want to check on the kids temperature. No need for running after them with the use of traditional methods.
I also love the app's temperature recording and graph feature, which helps a lot when mummy's brain can't work well on little sleep

Being a full-time working mom with two kids below the age of 4, no maid to help with the household chores, anything that helps make my life easier as a busy mom, I LOVE IT!

I saw a Rycom contactless thermometer (looks like a gun) at Unity. Has anyone bought this before and is it good?

Yes, mine just died 2 days ago when my DD was running a fever. I need to get one to replace and was also thinking about the contactless type where her school is using. Not sure how accurate is that. Anyone can advise?

For surface type thermometers (skin scan/ear), I’ll repeat a few times to get an average feel. Armpit is very close but then it’s very difficult esp with young children.

PDs say ear thermometers are less accurate cos they tend to report higher than accurate temperatures. so sometimes they say things like, with a ear thermometer, only when it exceeds 37.5 or 38 degrees can it be considered fever.

Very good and lasts forever. Hospital grade, I think. Braun ear thermometer good too, but rather difficult to position in baby’s small ears as temp reading is affected by the correct position/angle that the sensor is being placed in the ear. In fact, this is the problem with ear thermometers.

But do find the reading quite funny at times. I have used for coming to 10yrs already.


I remember my pead told me if want the most accurate reading is to take the armpit reading. So for all my kids if I suspect the fever is really very high, hitting 30degree, I will usually try to take the armpit thermometer with the normal thermometer.

Pigeon thermometer was good - used it from when DS1 was born (now he’s 6).

Also bought a Terumo thermometer from mustafa (think about $70). I like it. Quite nifty, quite trust its reading also.

should be a decent choice/buy, bought in 2003, just after DD was born, and in the aftermath of the terrible SARS.

supposed to be a good deal, as bought from a supplier who provide medical supplies to a hospital…

I'm using OMRON ear thermometer too 7 also find its reading not accurate. Seems to be higher. :roll:

Agree that Braun is a good brand but the price is on the high side (>$100).

This is a very popular brand & model. It costs around $100-$150 (sorry can’t rem. the exact price now) in S’pore but you can get it at much much lower price from those overseas sprees organised by some mummies.
