This would really help those who would be going through the same process for the very 1st time next year.

To start off...let me share mine.....

My hubby n I decided to register our gal into Beacon Pri. So both of us took A/L for the registration on the 1st day. We were No. 146 and the school has only 204 plcs available!

So the next few days became a very stressful day for me as I wasn't sure that my gal would be successful. Out of anxiousness, I took urgent leave on the 3rd n last day of registration to specially go to the school to ask for advice on my chances! Boy was I in shock! 200 plcs had already been taken up by those living within 1km......I was stressed out...what should I do......how to compete for 4 plcs among 170 other applicants!!!! Aargh!!!!

So I called up my hubby and told him what was happening.....and he said \"OK......u decide\"........WAT!!!!! I was left all by myself to decide what was the next course of action would be.....I became even more stressed......FYI....I shouldn't even be worried cos infront of our block there is a primary school......which I am not keen of sending my gal there....1st n foremost reason.....it's dual session......and I have 2 gals only 1 year apart......so meaning when the elder 1 is in P2 morning session....the younger one will be in P1 afternoon session....Imagine the chaos! So...die.....die must try find a single session school.

And that was how I ended up with CHIJ OQLP. I had all the documents ready just incase I had to go MOE for the statutory declaration since my parents stay within 2km of the school. So I withdrew my gal's registration from Beacon. Then I called up CHIJ to ask if I am eligible for the 1-2km.....and they said yes! I was relieved! And when I went there....I did my math and concluded that no matter what.....my gal will definitely get the school without having to ballot! BUT......the story doesn't end there......I BECAME VERY KIASU......&.........GREEDY!!!!

Hmmm......should I try my luck with RGPS???? BTW......in the morning before all these......after I'd sent my hubby to work.......I secretly went to RGPS to see what my chances were......and they were good actually! From the numbers....even if my gal were to ballot.....there was about 60-70% chance of getting a plc there......my mind was racing....should I go for RGPS.....or should I just register in CHIJ.......

After the withdrawal....I went back to RGPS to see my chances and they were still the same......I was really torn....I was confused.....I didn't know what to do.....I was just sitting in the car and trying to decide! I hadn't had my breakfast.....and it was almost lunch! And I wasn't feeling hungry at all................

I wanted the best for my gal....something that I never had......and the urge to register in RGPS was enormous.......but my logical side took over me. I started thinking.....just like the price of COE.....it always exponentiate in the last half hour.....and what if that's how the scenario was going to be like in RGPS when suddenly you see an exodus number of parents coming in to register at the eleventh hour......then my chances will be bleak.....and I would end up with the school right infront of my block.....just like in \"The Dog & the Bone\" story!

So I went back to CHIG OQLP to register my gal.....and that was my story!

I am sure some other parents have had an eventful experience when registering your child....do share.....cos this will certainly be with you a lifetime

Reply to Share with us your kid's P1 registration experience on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 14:29:04 GMT

Can I conclude to say that for those outside 1km, should register on the last day , close to the closing of the registration time, say about 2pm? Being a P2C applicant, it was extremely stressful and unpleasant.

Pre-registration, was worry-some and many sleepless nights
After registration, was tough and sleepless due to the balloting wait
Post-balloting, for me & spouse ... was a total breakdown (balloted OUT)

My spouse and I would never want to go through that cycle again ... it was a terrible and horrible experience.

Finally and fortunately, we still managed to get our child into the school of our choice (school that we had registered in P2C).. factual, perservere and determination shall pay off. With that, we have no more worry for our 2nd child who will be admitted into the same school as his sibling in 3 years time.

Hmmm.... balloted out... but still got into the sch later... how ah? After then, I've wrote in to MOE, called/met the school's Principal for discussion. Telling them all my problems and how the registration system had affected us (because I have only 1 school within 2km and NO school within 1km). With this factual, MOE has verified and consulted the school. My son was then placed on the highest priority in the waiting list .. and fortunately by early Nov, we were told by the school to transfer and register our son to the school of our choice as there was a withdrawal from the school.

It was really a close shave, but my family was very happy thereafter.

In a nutshell, parents should not take PV as Kiasu or chore, or too likely. The effect of being asked to ballot or being balloted out, is extremely stressful and terrifying. PV or Grassroots is the only revenue (other than clans/churches) to give your kid(s) an early adidtional chance to enrol into the school of your choice. The best co-ed sch around my neighbourhood (1-2km) is Rulang Pri Sch. Cos dd is the 1st born and having no experience whatsoever with the pre-P1 registration exercise, I was too late in being a PV for the school. Then i started to pull all strings (my great grandfather helped to start the sch during the pre-war, kampung days, my late father had been very active as the treasurer in the School's advisory Board, all my cousins and brothers studied there, even my auntie has a stall in the canteen, my father's best friends are still in the Advisory board and my mum made many phone calls to them).

Alas! All I get from the then Principal was, \"Sorry, MOE rule...must go by the book. You register under Phase 2C and if can't get in, we will put you on the waiting list.\" :stupid: Knowing Phase 2C balloting for Rulang has always been crazy, I decided to put my dd in my alma mater (CHIJ, OLQP) the safest bet and no stress.

When it was my ds turn for P1 registration, I was super kiasu and started to register myself as PV for Rulang. I was accepted as PV, then the school called me and asked me if I am interested to be in the School's Advisory Board (they found out that my late father was the SAB's treasurer) to make space for 1 more PV. Naturally, i agreed cos that will put me under Phase 2A2. But the application was rejected (cos I am a SAHM without much contribution to the school!) and the sch has pulled me out of the PV status. For MSH, I guess if ds can take MRT, it will be convenient (2 stops) but in the first few years, we gotta fetch him. Dun want to waste money and time on the school bus. At least you got into the school. I didn't dare to try CHS or ATS at all coz I can't stomach the risk of not getting a place. We were 1km from CatHi AND Ai Tong... good planning right? NOT. We were in the vicinity of 2 of the most highly sought after schools in Singapore's most densely populated district. I tot I had a good chance at CHS since we could register at Phase 2B and <1km. Everyone we knew said we stood a high chance. How were we to know 2010 would be a freak year? 9 seats were left and 48 people <1km registered to ballot. Like many Catholic Bishan moms, I refused to take the risk and decided to try Maris Stella instead. The admin person at MSH was really nice and even advised that they don't usually have balloting at P2B. Lo and behold, it was also a freak year at MSH where they had a ballot at P2B for the first time! Though it was only over subscribed by 7 pax, all of us still didn't want to be the 7 who don't get a place...

The Balloting was held in the AVA room on the 3rd floor... I climbed the stairs till I panted. It was full house by the time it started. Citizens all had 2 ballot slips while the 5 PRs had just one each. The slips were all projected for all to witness and thrown into the bowl. Children were then asked to come up to pick 10 slips each. My son's slip was chosen by an IJ gal. I kept saying the Memorare to Our Lady and we asked the Holy Spirit to guide the gal's hand. We let out a huge sigh of relief when my ds' name was called. Praise the Lord. We are thankful that this is HIS will.

The supposed CHS boy will now be a Marist boy. Perhaps it is God's will to place him at MSH since MSH is a badminton powerhouse. I always felt it a waste of ds' badminton talents if he went into CHS which didn't have the sport as a CCA.

Congratulations! It indeed sounded scary! I cannot imagine if it's my turn which need to ballot.

i3mum
