I understand that points for higher Chinese can only be used for applying to SAP schools , but is it true the aggregate score for 4 subjects must be min 250 in order to use the higher chinese points.
e.g if aggregate score is 243 , and higher chinese is 3- distinction , and if apply to sap schools, can it be 246 then ?

T-score of 230 is considered ... low.

230 falls outside Top 30 %, of the entire PSLE cohort.

Ever since MOE implemented the new rule that, \"No Appeal allowed to be entertained, if a P6 student is unable meet the Secondary school's Cut-off-point\" :-
one P6 student with 228 (+ 2), her add up Total is 230, attempted to enter a SAP secondary school via appeal, but was rejected eventually, because her 230 is outside Top 30 % score. Consequently, this student is unable to make use of her (+2) Higher Chinese Merit, to enter the SAP school.

(+2): is a respectable score, for Higher Chinese


for Higher Chinese
Distinction is 80 marks and above (not 85) : +3

Merit is 65 to 79 marks (not 60) : +2

Pass is 50 to 64 (range) : +1


Based on latest 2017 Psle batch :-
one SAP school with the lowest Cut-off point (COP) is ... Maris Stella Secondary (refer #42, inside listing below).

Maris Stella COP is 236

Hence, the Cut-off, for Top 30 % cohort, fall around this figure ... 236 (based on 2017 PSLE batch, because performance of each PSLE batch differ, every year).

236 ... is past 235, already.

T-score of 250 :
is for Top 10 % PSLE cohort.

SAP school, I think also use to have 2 streams (Express and Special, but not sure now), and usually is above around 250 COP and is indeed around top 30% of cohort.

Merit, I thought starts from 60
1) Express and Special had been merged into 1.
2) there're still quite a few SAP schools with COP of less than 250 (some only 23X)
3) merit for HCL (for primary school) is from 65 - 79, not from 60

No lah, 250+ is about Top 10%, depending on cohort.

Distinction ≥ 80
Merit 65 - 79
Pass 50 - 64

There's no minimum aggregate before you're allowed to use the HCL bonus points.
