<![CDATA[JC1 STUDENT FARE BADLY DURING YEAR END EXAM-WHAT'S NEXT??]]>My girl did badly in her JC 1 final exam. She has a good raw score of 9 in her 'O" levels, went to a good JC and find that she couldn’t cope - "culture /learning shock" I think! Did badly but not so bad that the school is prepared to push her up. She is so demotivated and demoralished by the marking system. She has worked so so hard but could barely pass 50% in all her 3 X H2 subjects. Now she is contemplating going to the Singapore Polytechnic to start afresh. But I think it is a waste because it is like picking an easy way out whereas she thinks she has no stamina to go & fight. What can I do to convince her otherwise? She still has Nov & Dec to brush up her work before school reopen for JC2 and she has spent so much time on project work as well. Sigh!

Yup dd1's JC did away for JC1 this year too.... But my ds is not in the same JC as her and I heard the term \"advance\" in the event one don't clear promo and wonder what it means.

Unsure how true it is, some JCs are also well known for not promoting... dd1 had sec school friend (traditionally academically strong type) who was retained in JC1.... we stopped ds from choosing that JC as top choice as he can be a wild card too.[/quote]So which jc is that?

She understands from her senior that should one fails to be promoted to J2, PW will still go on this year and be awarded PW A levels cert next year. The student need not do PW in the 2nd attempt of JC1.

I believe this is the case. My friend's son repeated JC1 but didn't have to redo PW or MT. The rule is that GP and the content subjects must be in the same sitting, but PW can be in a separate sitting.

I heard from my DD yes, there are some JCs only give the promo results in nov.
these will be the JCs that have no re-exam in JC1, I guess.

Being below average of the cohort isn't a good indicator of how she'll do at A levels, because of the varying calibre of students in different JCs. In a better JC, being below average would still land you in university. A better gauge would be to speak to the teachers. An experienced teacher from that JC would be able to tell you, based on past statistics, how your daughter is likely to fare given her promo results. I know of a student who scored a D in the promos but was assured by the subject teacher that the student would score an A in the A levels. Which is what happened.

She will have to wither figure out how to maximize her chances, or accept what she is. My older girl is not an exam-smart person, and gets flustered easily. It's something she has not been able to overcome completely, and she (and we) have accepted that that is just her makup. In general, when her teachers predict that, on her general ability,she might be able to get a a range of grades, e.g. B to C, she will get the lower end in exams. What to do? I am like that myself, though I was fortunate that my \"range\" was higher.

The next question to ask is how well that portion of the previous cohort did in their A levels. If she is one of those JCs where the majority get into university, and more than half get 4 As, then being below the average isn't too bad. Also, some kids will improve a lot in 2nd year, and if your daughter hasn't worked as hard as she might because of CCAs, getting used to the system etc, then she may one of those.

I believe that they can use their O level results and apply for poly with the next year's entry, and start in April. If they were in an IP school, they can use their Yr 4 results, but they may have a different application route (must check the individual poly websites).

How badly? Where does she stand in the cohort? And how did the past cohort do in the A levels? Some/most JCs mark strictly for the promos, partly to let the weaker students know how much the still have to do, and partly not to let the better ones get complacent. Some students take time to get the hang of A level work, and the 2nd year can see a lot of improvement. I have heard of some students who got Es or failed in JC1 and still managed to get some As in the end (but this will not be the case for all). Talk to the teachers and get a sense of how they think she will fare eventually - the experienced ones will generally have a good \"feel\". It could be that your daughter has done quite badly, and the teachers may suggest taking another year in JC1 - you should consider this if necessary, and for some students, the additional time can do wonders. I know of a couple of students (small sample, I know) who did repeat a year in JC, and eventually did well enough to get into a local university.

My older daughter is not a very strong student, and we knew she would find JC very stressful and too fast-paced, so we recommended that she go to MI and do a 3-year course. She did badly in her first year, but gradually improved over each of the next 2 years, so we are really thankful she had the extra year. Even though she didn't do very well in the end, she did get into a less-competitive course in NTU, which is more that we had hoped for.

There are some private schools offering private A.

However, the standard of those schools is incomparable with local JCs. JC -> local U 80%, private A -> local U 5%

Retaining is a better choice for most of the students.
