In the armed forces, when a junior rank salutes, a salute must be returned by the superior officer; in a school, when a student bows or greets a teacher, the teacher should return the respect.

I have always referred to my students as ‘gentlemen’ or ‘ladies’, they have always called me ‘sir’ or 'Mr … '. I respect every student as an individual who has rights which I am helping to protect; but that is contingent on the student acting as a member of the society or culture which allows me to guard those rights.
