<![CDATA[How do you store your kids photos?]]>Hi,


I’m one diligent mum who regularly develops my kids pictures and arrange them nicely in albums. I hope these will be a good momento for them when they grow up.

But I think this will not work cos I’m seriously running out of space! And it takes lots of time and effort to do so.

I would like to know how other parents are managing this. Can u share pls?

I used to do it at the kodak photoshop (suntec, tampines, raffles place, quite many branches). Recently bought a package from some shop (think it's around Peninsula Plaza) during IT show (they have pretty good offers during such events - I have seen them on the past 2 IT shows already). Havent' got around to organizing the photos, sigh....I get headache thinking about sifting through those photos - but the end result will be worth it.

Agree!! I have kept my wedding album in the store room and it's so difficult to bring it out. Heehee....intend to organise all my photos. Aiyo...miss the chance to get spare harddisk at Sitex.

Btw will shop do a preliminary layout for us to view before printing? Or we need to download some software to do it ourselves?

You have a choice of either.

I downloaded the software and did the album on my own.

Wwo....duriz, you are so sweet. My colleague also printed her son photo in a calender to be placed in her DH's office. But I don't like the idea of printing on calender. Prefer those album or magazine kind. Btw will shop do a preliminary layout for us to view before printing? Or we need to download some software to do it ourselves?

Ya Mrs Ang, harddisks are not all that reliable.

Ours crashed with our wedding and DD's pics in it.

Luckily got backup and printed copies.

There are many free photobook software available online.

When we were at a cordblood seminar, we bought a package from http://www.albumstories.com/Index.html

We bought 3 coupons/packages, valid for 2 years @$79.90. I'd used one for our wedding pics. Will use one for DD's 1st year pics. I'd also printed mugs with DD's pic on it for MIL, FIL, DH and my Mom.

I have 3 hard disks. One crashed already. In the process of burning them into DVDs. Anyone knows what is the lifespan of these digital gadgets?

DH (who's in IT) tells me every 3-5 years must buy new harddisks becos the old one will spoil. He's now in charge of the backup.

I used to print the nicer pictures (then again, all pictures of our babies are nice right?) into 4Rs. Now I will take the nicest pictures for 1 year, collate and then print in photobook. It's small, nifty and won't need backup!

No doubt it may fade over time, but photo restoration technology is available. Yes, agreed it takes time and $$ to print and arrange the photos. Maybe, looking at a different perspective, we should be thankful and grateful that we have all these happy and tedious task to do.

AND

2. Secondary backup - External harddisk or/& CDs.

I have also uploaded the albums to my ipad and I can view them anytime and anywhere.

Another option is select those good ones, make into clips with software like imovie, premiere pro, element ... It can be stored in dvd or hdd to play on TV. I have done so for dd by events she participate. Still have a lot to do for her for since baby till now 🙂


Similarly I also have loads of photos both digital and hard copies. For digital I select some and have them as screensaver at home and in the office for daily viewing. For grandparents, I printed some and place in the IKEA flip-type photo frame for their table top.

I also make a papa and son photo book which features nice pics of them doing things together for my hubby’s birthday every year. I try to find pics from every month so it tracks my son’s growth as well. Into my 4th year now. Developed 4R prints at Harvey Norman at promo 19 cents each. I think promo still on until 31 dec.

My eldest is 5yo and i have not printed my both kids photos since birth. I am thinking to do it soon.

Initially, i was thinking to keep it in a traditional way, there is keep all photos in albums. A lot of works though!

Where did u print the photo-albums? I tried 1 Malaysian printer, price is reasonable but quality of the printed photos are not very good. I’ve also tried another local printer, quality is good but it’s pricey. And yes, it takes a lot of time and effort in doing up the layouts

later paranoid the whole lot crash / gone (as i did not develop a single photo since birth) so spent $500 to develop photos of my gal since birth till 2008..

now in the process of cherry picking 2009 photos to develop..

when i'm done with cherry picking and developing the 2010 photos, i will develop bit by bit going forward to avoid humongous developing bill.. 😞

The default photo album that comes with iPad is good enough.

Before 2002, i used to use films and developed into 4R and put in album…later face similar issues w tonnes of diff album… Then come the digital edge! Everything can be stored in hard disk… I move over since then, and organise my photos based on yrs… Since 2002 till now, every yr, one
directory… And with backup… If i encountered any failure, i still got separate backup… It will only be god’s will if my primary and backups failed at the same time!


Now the cons about this… My mom had been complaining abt lack of photos of her grandsons… I bought her a digital photo album and she rejected it… Waste of electrical energy… Now owe her hundreds, if not thousands, of backlog… I understand it is good to have real photo develope, can touch and feel, than digital display…but if space is a constraint, u don’t have much of a choice de.
