Same here. I am interested in history, but more the social angle - how people lived, worked, interacted, etc, and only tangentially the politics and warfare. And I had a terrible history teacher in lower sec. That was when I decided I would continue to read historical novels, but not study it as a subject!

Hmm... I was thinking that she may have referred to \"Apocalypse Now\". However, being a 1979 film, doubt she would have seen it unless she had actively looked for it (I owned the DVD 2019 Final Cut version though).

As a Guardsmen who had an opportunity to train with and fly on the Huey, the 'Ride of the Valkyries' scene in the movie is DA BOMB (atrocities aside)!

Another WW2 movie that is \"different\" is Jojo Rabbit, on Disney+, which is a bit like Grave of the Fireflies. It looks at Hitler and Germany from the POV of a German boy, and it's 100x funnier (it's by Taika Waititi) than The Boy in Striped Pyjamas.

I think you're spot on about the point of Humanities like History and Lit. Indeed it is about POV - a war looks different from victor vs loser, leader, soldier or victim. Not clear cut. I also enjoy revisionist histories that retell the same history with a different cut.
Oooh. A war movie aficionado like me 🙂 Yeah, I've seen Jojo Rabbit. Pretty good show. Funny but sad. A perfect picture of a small child's viewpoint of a useless war. I know the story of The Boy In Striped Pajamas... thought that the story is a little contrived and didn't watch it. It was part of my son's Sec 3 reading list, though.

Got new Midway movie meh? You mean the one on Netflix? That's like 2 or 3 years old 😂 . Seen bits and pieces of it, but it's more hollywood than a real war movie. I much prefer the older Midway movie. Less about Hollywood glamour. But what I'd rather see is a Midway movie made by the Japanese themselves. The tragedy of having the cream of the crop being sunk in 4 minutes must be so devastating for them.

And human as a society, the same behaviours were repeated throughout histories. Knowing the pasts will provide some indications of future behaviour. Students whom are keen in public service may be keen in studying history.


1 of my favourite movie is “ Sum of all fears” from 20 years ago by Tom Clancy. In the movie, the person that save the world from nuclear fallout is a historian! 😄

Haha I took Eng Lit at A levels, so no, wouldn't say to avoid it like the plague. In fact, if your child loves Lit and books, it is easy to do well in. There is very little studying if you are good. Again, it comes down to the child's aptitude, as you say.

No word on History? Is it easy in JC, like Econs? It could be a nice contrast to STEM, as it's mostly reading and analysis.
I don't know any specifics as to what is easy/hard, what skill needed, etc. At the end of the day, kid needs to select what he/she likes...

Generically, I think History is the most versatile of the three (plus general knowledge of world events), and would recommend this one if the student had no opinion. I also like the H2 language classes and the Chinese related classes (CSC, CLL, or TRC), but both of these require specific skills/interest that not all will have.

Personally, I like Econ but I don't think it gives one much of a leg up in uni. You may be taking the same thing for a semester there (or maybe you can skip the 101 class depending on where you go). I may also be biased because I think the humanities are a bit neglected and many would benefit from the skills (direct and indirect) they are trying to develop. I also think many can probably just read the econ textbook and absorb much of the material on their own (again, possibly biased based on how my brain works).

Learn to the read the news (or history books) in multiple languages from different sources. Same event covered in a different way, one will often have some interesting things to think about...

\"War film\" is probably one of my favourite genre and the topic of war is probably among my favourite subjects.
I used to (and still do) look out for such films when I ran out of things to watch :evil:
