<![CDATA[All About : Go (Weiqi,围棋)]]>My child has learned Weiqi for 4+ years. From my experience and what I observed on other Weiqi kids, they have very good school performance, especially in math.

I don't have any statistic analysis results for these Singapore Weiqi kids, what I can show you are only some examples of these real kids. During last several years, I have also collected information regarding why and how Weiqi can improve children's intelligence, concentration, memory ability. I would like to share it with everybody in the thread later on. Interestingly, all the principle learned during Weiqi training can be applied to children's daily life, you can image how strong a kid’s mental will be after trained to face so many failures and still willing to have continuous challenges.

As my daughter is in primary 5, so I am more familiar with these Weiqi kids who are primary 6 and primary 5 now. I give you some examples:

Kheng Hun, GEP student, scored 272 in 2010 PSLE, accepted by RI via DSA, strong in Weiqi, gold medal in NUS High Olympiad Maths when he was in P4, P5, P6 for 3 consecutive year.
Likai, GEP student, very strong in Weiqi (in P6 now, still spend time for Weiqi training during weekend in Singapore Weiqi Association). He has received lots of Olympiad Maths medals in the past years (like Gold for 2009 AMC8). Piano 8 grade, and is the 1st in National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore 2010 (NUS high Olympiad maths)(http://oas.highsch.nus.edu.sg/NMOS/NMOS%20Prize%20Winners%202010.pdf )
Xiangyu, lots of Champion in primary school Weiqi competition, Champion of Shoutan Cup in P5, Top student in his school, National Award in 2010 AMC8, Gold medal in National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore 2010 (NUS high Olympiad maths) (http://oas.highsch.nus.edu.sg/NMOS/NMOS%20Prize%20Winners%202010.pdf )
Yifei,is a real Weiqi lover, very strong in Weiqi, the 4th in 2010 World Youth Goe Championship, Bronze medal in ACS Olympiad Maths.
HuangQi, GEP student, lots of Champion in primary school Weiqi competition, 1st runner up in 2010 Singapore national Ladies Weiqi Open Group. Also strong in Olympiad Math (I don’t have details about this).
Aiyun, Top student, lots of medal in primary school Weiqi competition, Champion for 2010 Singapore national Ladies Weiqi Junior Group. Also strong in Olympiad Math (I don’t have details about this).
Shuwei, Top student in her school. Lots of champion in primary school Weiqi competition, Champion of 2010 Singapore national Ladies Weiqi Open Group. Now in P5, Distinction in English and Writing, Science in ICAS, high distinction in ICAS Math. Bronze Medal in 2010 AMC8.
Kangzeng, GEP student, lots of medal in Primary school Weiqi competition, High distinction in ICAS Maths

I don’t have all the detailed information, this information were learned during causal chat with parents. Weiqi lovers from NUS, NTU, RGS may also have their own story, unfortunately I don’t have enough information. Maybe, in future somebody should spend time to conduct a comparison research. But what I can feel is most of the Weiqi trained kid are humble, intelligent, have strong memory and logic analysis ability, I will show you some research results to support my opinion and also some interesting facts about Weiqi.
I strongly suggest you introducing Weiqi to your kinds, don’t miss it and you will not regret. Actually, it will never be too late to learned Weiqi. I learned Weiqi in middle school, and if you visit Singapore Weiqi Association, you can meet with Weiqi lover over 80 years old, still have very good memory and strong analysis, calculating skills. I believe that it is Weiqi keep them in good mental health.

Would like to share a very amazing life camp for kids, it falls on 12-17 March 2023 during the school break.

What we will do there is to let the kids grow while playing, taking on responsibilities and being independent. All of this while also learning Weiqi which helps to develop kids brain as well as manners/etiquettes.

It really depends on the child. His friends were all not interested in these mind games, so I had a hard time trying to convince him to go for lessons when he had no kakis there.


Other kids I heard could be keen from as young as 5 years old. Why don’t you try a short holiday program for your girls? That would be a short term commitment to gauge their interest.

Heard good comments on Go Academy, DS went to Singapore Weiqi Association (nearer to our place). There are usually some holiday sessions... in my opinion, that is the best way to try.

Won't recommend just getting anyone who know the game to teach, as the process teaching a children on this game is very different. Going through a well establish process is much better.

This is from my personal experience. I play the game myself, but DS never really interested in the game until one day I bring him to the Association because I am a member there. There was training on that day, so I just let him sit in and try out... and that's how it all begin. 🙂

My son chanced upon the Weiqi set at his grandmother’s house and asked her to show him how to play. That’s how he got interested.

However, he prefers International Chess. So he spends more time playing on that set.

Maybe you can get a set for your child to try first, before you commit to any lessons. The set is not costly.

Hi Ichunheo,
I think it is ok to introduce weiqi to your kid.
however, be consider some of the weiqi school will group age 5 together with some elder kid like 6, 7, 8 years and even 12 years old.
to be fair, they are as commercial school of course it is much more easily to handle junior by a age range than by different all the class by different age.
just the thing to take note is their competitive match will held after each of their tutorial, your kid ( 5 1/2 years) may need to face the opponents who are elder. there have pros and cons.
if your kid can perform well, then very good.
It is still normal that elder kids more focus and cognitive than younger one, imagine a 5 yrs old kid playing match with a 9 yrs old, do you get what i mean? ( it will create some negativity --maybe) It like other kids 'step' your kid to climb more high level...example: 1 dan 2 dan...
so , i was thinking about pros and cons, it might also good to let them face the failure earlier ( provided parents should give kids a very strong mental support).

alternatively, 1 to 1 tutor is a not bad choice for young kid. ^^ ( i am not sure which teacher is good, you may need to explore youself).

above just my humble opinion, you may just consider. ^^

I think it should be alright as long as he is interested. I am not sure where is the weiqi center in sneaking, I think there is one in Bishan under weiqi association, You may try to google for it.

I am interested in letting my kids learn WeiQi. The association's various holiday programme looks interesting. However it seems that all are on half day basis. Being a full time working parent, I prefer whole day programme. Send them to the programme and then pick them up when I leave office. Maybe the association could consider whole day programme for elementary + intermediate level. I believe I am not the only parent who would prefer such arrangement.

Perhaps as the name implied \"2nd\" so they are pretty new?

Another more popular one happens yearly in March, the weekend before the school holiday, it is held at Tampines primary.

Is weiqi is less popular game in Singapore? It is very popular in china, Korea, Japan and it is a great mind sport which requires a lot of strategizing while playing with opponents. Highly recommended for parents who are thinking of holiday programme for their primary school kids.
