furthermore. is your company very small or big? if it’s small then it’s weird that your boss still gave you a report assignment when you’re on mc which he is suppose to know. if its big then i might actually be an honest mistake.

I don't fully agree.

For laptops : more from a business contiuity perspective, eg. flood / office building closed, so does not equate to agreeing 24/7.

For mobile phones / blackberry - yes; that may constitute to agreeing to be contactabale 24/7.

Again, I know of some directors in my company who will not reply to emails even though they have a BB when it is off office hours or when they are on vacation / leave. They do still take phone calls though.

Is this the first time something like that happen? Or is this a recurring habit? Does he do this to others as well? Just trying to ascertain his \"pattern\". Some bosses are workaholics n expect their staff to do the same. If he is one, then no surprises that he has set a dateline on Sunday. Hope he is not out to make life difficult for you πŸ™

For me, company paid for my phone, monthly subscription, overseas call and data plan (local & overseas - this is very expensive!!!). A typical weekday for me is the first thing when I wake up and last thing before I go to sleep is to check all my emails are cleared (make sure no arrows are left unattended). Weekends no different but maybe 1hr in between.

This I do not agree. Providing the staff with these equipments is to enable them to perform their job more efficiently and effectively. Once in a while if need be yes, this convenience may be called to use outside of working hours but not on a constant basis of being contactable 24/7. That is slavery.

If the business is dependent on that report, then your boss is being reasonable, and you should appreciate him as a boss.

If your boss's promotion is dependent on that report, then he is being human, and your support will be very much appreciated by him.

If the report is test your commitment, dedication or competency to your boss, then he is being pragmatic, and your performance will earn you his confidence in you.

Otherwise, if it is just to show that he has the authority to spoil the holidays for you, then he is just being a jerk. Not worth bothering about such bosses πŸ™‚

Surely no boss would put a deadline on a Sunday?

I disagree. I try my best NOT to be connected to the office.

I have refused to carry an office lap top. Even if your job does not require you to be contactable 24/7, the very fact that you carry an office laptop, handphone etc creates an expectation that you will be at the organisation's (or should I say boss') beck and call.

I reach the office at 0730 hrs and leave just before 2000 hrs on average. Once in a while I drop by the office for an hour or so on a Sat. That is a fair contribution, I think.
