So been out of touch for a while. I am planning for my second career (when the kids are older) and definitely smart phones and the like are creeping their way into the classrooms. Like NYGH using ipads, and PJC using iphones. So really feel the need to \"catch up\" and also to prevent any generation gap from building. As it is, when DD (12 yrs old) talks about Taylor Swift and other pop singers, I am already like \"huh, who?\" So far, in the family of non-techies, I am the \"know-all\" - so must hang on to that position. Maybe not know-all but at least won't go \"huh? What?\"

Do agree that \"dumb phones\" can provide information at a glance. At best, can only decide on what apps I want to display on the first page - or am I missing something here?

well, good for you for having the \"know it all\" role in the family. Nowadays technology is moving so fast that even the people in the high tech industry is having trouble catching up.
Don't worry about generation gap. The fact that you're closely involved with your children's daily lives means that there will not be any gap. As far as I'm concerned, generation gap exists when there is little to no communication between the generations. Once the communication channels are opened and used frequently, any distances can be bridged. On the other hand, if a high tech savy parent has little communication with their children, a huge generation gap will exist.
Generation gap is not about understanding the latest technological gadgets, or the latest pop culture, but whether your children can confide in you their daily problems, squabbles and joys.

No, you're not missing on anything when it comes to your homepage. The smartphone is actually a misnomer. As you've discovered, and as anyone else who has moved from dumbphones to \"smartphones\" have discovered, when it comes to daily tasks like making phone calls, searching for a contact to call, finding out who called, and so on, the smartphone user interface is actually more troublesome and unintuitive. You would have thought they would have got it right by now with the hindsight gleaned from the dumbphones.
After awhile, you'll get used to it. I still don't like it, but I got used to it.

On Android phones, you can put widgets on the homepage. There are a few calendar apps out there that are widgets. What are widgets ? well, they are just live icons (as opposed to dead icons representing an application), that displays real time information that the applicaton gathers or generates. Widgets also allows you to interact with the application via the widget user interface. So, they're pretty nifty to have around. However, as with everything else, there is a downside. Since widgets are \"alive\" all the time, they take up memory and memory is a precious commodity in Smartphones.
Smartphones starts lagging when there is insufficient memory.

cimman

Reply to Help me to choose Samsung galaxy S, galaxy tab or iphone? on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 05:03:23 GMT

Just want to know if android is compatible to flash player? Less than a day if turn on the wifi, GPS, etc.. and keeps it polling for mails. I would suggests getting extra batteries. They're a real life saver. You can get it from this website: http://www.spider-foot.com/
They're typically about US$15 or so for 2 batteries (third party battery). That's a very good deal compared to the S$70 per battery if you get the originals locally. Don't worry about having originals vs third party. It's such of waste then.

cimman

Reply to Help me to choose Samsung galaxy S, galaxy tab or iphone? on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 01:57:33 GMT

Daddy

BigDevil:
Based on no charge for wifi connection, then it is ok to set my phone's wifi settings to autoconnect?

Your battery will drain faster if your phone is constantly searching for a WIFI to connect to.

so end up cannot surf-on-the-go... cos' limited by battery... duh...
When you need to surf, surf...after all, that's part of what a smart phone is for.

What I'm saying is that don't leave your WIFI on all the time...only turn it on when you need to surf.

BigDevil

Reply to Help me to choose Samsung galaxy S, galaxy tab or iphone? on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 01:37:07 GMT

BigDevil:

TREX8:
Based on no charge for wifi connection, then it is ok to set my phone's wifi settings to autoconnect?

Your battery will drain faster if your phone is constantly searching for a WIFI to connect to.

so end up cannot surf-on-the-go... cos' limited by battery... duh...

Daddy D

Reply to Help me to choose Samsung galaxy S, galaxy tab or iphone? on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 01:32:34 GMT

TREX8:
Based on no charge for wifi connection, then it is ok to set my phone's wifi settings to autoconnect?

Your battery will drain faster if your phone is constantly searching for a WIFI to connect to.

BigDevil

Reply to Help me to choose Samsung galaxy S, galaxy tab or iphone? on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 14:41:00 GMT

Daddy

TREX8:

Daddy D, I got my phone at $240 on M1's Value plan ($36/mth), after $100 subsidy and $50 android phone promotion. Now, only \"problem\" seems that battery drains out rather fast compared to my Nokia E63. But it could be because I have been using it more to try out this and that.

Daddy D, I got my phone at $240 on M1's Value plan ($36/mth), after $100 subsidy and $50 android phone promotion. Highlighted in red.
In general, no charges are applied when you use Wifi to surf the internet, whether at home or outside.
Charges only kicks in when you use 3G. You can download an app to help track your data usage for 3G.
In general, I prefer to use wifi at home because it is much, much faster than 3G and it's free Free Wifi in public areas is prone to dropped connections and slow speed. I'll rather use 3G then.
What I will need to figure out (and appreciate if anyone can share) is the charges for accessing internet/emails etc on the go. I've gotten a value dataplan which allows for 12GB of free data per month. Would like to know whether charges apply in the following scenarios:

1. When I access and surf/download information from the internet using the wireless connection at home?
No charges.

2. When I access and surf/download information from the internet using wireless@sg.
No charges.

3. Can I access the internet \"as and when\" (that is, outside of my house and wireless@sg spots)?
Sure, but that doesn't mean it's hassle free. I am not a media heavy person (that is, almost never download songs, videos etc) and mainly access the internet to read emails and surf for news.
