well, I used to be dealing with educational technology before \"retiring\" (as my DD nicely puts it, about 5 yrs ago). So been out of touch for a while. I am planning for my second career (when the kids are older) and definitely smart phones and the like are creeping their way into the classrooms. Like NYGH using ipads, and PJC using iphones. So really feel the need to \"catch up\" and also to prevent any generation gap from building. As it is, when DD (12 yrs old) talks about Taylor Swift and other pop singers, I am already like \"huh, who?\" So far, in the family of non-techies, I am the \"know-all\" - so must hang on to that position. Maybe not know-all but at least won't go \"huh? What?\" :roll:

Do agree that \"dumb phones\" can provide information at a glance. My previous phone can display my calender items for the day, missed call and sms on the same homepage. Now I have to tap on Calender to access my today's list.. Can't seem to customise my homepage like I used to. At best, can only decide on what apps I want to display on the first page - or am I missing something here?

Actually, don't upgrade to a smartphone just because kids are using them. Of course the children loves smartphone, it just because there're so many games available on them. Your kids will be faster than you, whether you like it or not, simply because they're born in the 21st century with gadgets you've never dreamed of before when you're at their age. When they're into their teens, you can't even hope to catch up, no matter how many gadgets you buy. They'll be talking about web page development, mobile apps developement, hacking, robotics, etc... Don't worry, you'll never be obsolete. Your life experiences will beat any new fangled gadget or technology anyday.

However, that should not be the reason why you're buying the smartphone. If you don't really need the features of the smartphone, ie. email checking, synchronized calendar, stock monitoring applications, then just go with a dumbphone. They can last for days on a single charge and is really easy to use. I find that I needed more button presses to get to typical normal phone stuff (like creating new contacts, SMS) compared to dumbphones. So dumbphones are really not that dumb after all.

Don't get caught in all these gadget marketing. Just buy what you really need. Most people get the phone to play games, which is really such a waste. It's becoming more of a status symbol than anything else. A lot of people buys a smartphone and uses it like a dumbphone. It's such of waste then.

Will try to look for the apps to track data usage. Now, only \"problem\" seems that battery drains out rather fast compared to my Nokia E63. But it could be because I have been using it more to try out this and that.

I decided to \"upgrade\" to a smart phone primarily so as to keep in touch with technology --otherwise, my kids will be faster than me and I feel it is impt to keep in touch with them.

Some friends told me that there is no need to pick up a dataplan but the phone will cost more. So I thought just top up about $10 per mth from my regular plan - otherwise, as your said \"then the smart phone not very smart liao?\"

Cool... I also have to upgrade cos' everyone is using smartphone liao.
Looking at Starhub smartsurf... $38/mth... also have $100 trade-in.
Headache to choose from so many brands/models... and still have to spend more time to re-learn how to use a phone... :stupid: :celebrate:

I've answered your questions below. Highlighted in red.
In general, no charges are applied when you use Wifi to surf the internet, whether at home or outside.
Charges only kicks in when you use 3G. You can download an app to help track your data usage for 3G.
In general, I prefer to use wifi at home because it is much, much faster than 3G and it's free Free Wifi in public areas is prone to dropped connections and slow speed. I'll rather use 3G then.

Apps... mostly games lah. Some apps are for news, stocks, dictionary and etc.... Both free and paid.

The phone subsidy for 12mths recontract is $100 lesser compared to 21mths (also depending on plans).
