I'm a 14yr Sec 2 student and I'm thinking of taking up figure skating. There's just one problem. I have never ice skated before. Never. I'm looking for recommendations of coaches that are dedicated and unafraid to push their students 🙂 Do you have any rink recommendations too? Would you reckon I self-learn the basics before enlisting a coach? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Anyway, I havent found many avenues to get 2nd hand skates and I wonder what should I do to DD's skate when she outgrows them.

I supposed your DD/ DS is learning? How old is she/ he? How advance is she/ he?
Actually I don't have children haha and it is my friend who is learning 🙂 15 going on 16, and she takes private lessons. She can do skills Figure 5.

Hello ZuEn! I have a friend who does figure skating, and she says it would be best not to get second hand skates, although it is cheaper than the new ones (I was planning to get new skates too). The second hand skates would take the shape of the previous owners feet, and your child's feet might be different from the previous owners', so the support will not be there.

Which level were u before u switch to private lessons? Private coach means 1 to 1? Also, how did u find your private coach?


I was thinking if I should let her learn with the public for the basic one before switching her.


I was in Figure 2 when i switched. The whole Learn to skate course stretches until Figure 5. You can enquire about 1 to 1 lessons at the counter. They charge $32.10 for 15 minutes and it is recommended for classes to be 30 minutes so that will be $64.20 per lesson. You can choose for her to complete at least the core blades level, then switch to 1 to 1 after that 🙂 cheers!

I just signed my 6YO girl for the Learn to Skate Level 1 and started our 1st lesson last Saturday at The Rink in JCube. My girl loves it.

Accordingly to the chart in The Rink’s website, there are like 4 levels (and 5 lessons per level) before we can proceed on to the figure skating classes. Does anybody know if this is the only route to go?

The sales at the counter doesnt seem to know much.


The other path is doing private lessons. For me i feel its better that way. I myself didn’t complete the Learn to skate program before moving to private lessons. I learnt much faster and my coach helped me kick off my bad habits.

Kids were interested in ice skating and we actually went to the MBS rink previously and witnessed how wobbly the coaches skated...OMG (Disclaimer: of cos this is my personal opinion and may of course be biased since i am no professional)


and yes agree that you should always let your child learn to roller blade first. build the confidence plus improves the balance and motor. ice skating is much more costly....perhaps you try some good skate schools like inline fitness http://www.inlinefitness.org or http://www.skate-with-us.com, they are a specialised skate school by montessori for children. Got a recommendation from my ex-colleague previously and we took on a private class with them quite good. (disclaimer again: your experience may differ okay? 🙂 )

Apparently, her child attended their ice skating workshop last summer or some time back and they did this like costume ice skating workshop thingy. not sure if it is seasonal.

You will realise it doesn’t hurt to fall. But of course I’m not talking about falling when skating at high velocity. That will give a large impact and it’ll hurt. Normal falling won’t hurt.

How to overcome fear of ice skating? I had a 1-2-1 ice skating lesson, which went well. I am fine when somebody holds my hand and I can even skate a little bit by myself. I really need to practice but when I go by myself I panic, like I cant breathe and my head spins even if I hold onto the barrier. I am really angry at myself, it feels hopeless.

I guess you have a fear of falling and hurting yourself. You should get some shin guards, elbow guards and wrist guards, and then fall in a controlled manner. Try falling a few times on the ice, maybe that will get you over your phobia.

Alternatively, try rollerblading first. Once you get the hang of rollerblading, you can come back to ice skating with a better sense of balance. When you first try rollerblading, go to a grassy patch and try walking to get your sense of balance. Don't try on a concrete pavement till you can walk confidently on the grassy patch at a brisk pace.
